Hello,

I am new here and I just have a few questions, which I know have probably been asked 1000 times!!
I have a 1974 charger se 318

I am in the middle of a motor swap to a 440
It's a 1978 440 with 46,000 miles
I have new heads, new lifters, new cam, new intake, new carb, new timing chain, new gaskets, rebuilt the Trans that was on the 440, and a bunch more
I have the motor mount conversion kit, HD springs in the rear of the car, new rear end gears, new disk brakes, new torsion bars,

My questions are
1. Am I forgetting anything else?
2. Does anyone know if the drive shaft will need to be shortened?

i'm doing the same... if you get the right oil pan you don't need to do anything with the motor mounts, i have a 77 440 from a motorhome completely rebuilt. i have my motor & tranny in the car, almost ready to fire! if i can help u in any way just ask!! good luck its a tight fit!

charger74318to440

what kind of oil pan? and what kind of headers did you install?

66fury

i went with stock headers for a car not a motor home and the oil pan was very hard to find but i found it on a web site it is especially for 71-74 b body engine swap from sb to bb. i think the number on it was 972... i will check it out tomorrow and post it.

66fury

oh by the way, not sure if your engine is from a motorhome but if it is.... check your heads some of them (like mine) take a tapered spark plug don't try to force normal 440 plugs in they will not work! you can tell by the angle of the plugs, mine are almost straight out from the heads instead of angled. cheers!

66fury

looking back at your post u mentioned drive shaft, my 318 had a 904 tranny, so i went and got a drive shaft from a mopar guru friend but i did have to cut it down about 3-4 in.

Thanks for all the info!!!
I will check the plugs and if you could get me a link to that oil pan I would greatly appreciate that!!

One more question what did you do with your radiator?

Cooter

Do a search here. PLENTY of info on this swap....Well worth it, but NOT as easily done as some of the Small Block Chevy- to Big Block Chevy that most may be used to where everything just bolts up.

my car didn't have a rad when i got it.... i hate to say it but i called napa and got a new aftermarket, plastic tanks :rotz:. you may have to change tranny mount if u have a 904 ... i had to, no big deal. i am still looking for the web site for the oil pan. i will find it! cheers!

charger74318to440

OK i have not heard about the trans mount

what is different? and where did you get yours if you don't mind me asking? :icon_smile_question:

66fury

i got mine from a 73 charger which had a 440.... parts car, would advise u to do the same for all the little things and there are lots of them!!! the trannys didn't even come close to mounting up the same way, 904 was shorter.

66fury

just checked under my car oil pan is a 971 just gives a 1/2 inch of clearance off k-frame! :2thumbs:

charger74318to440

Sweet I bought a 971   :coolgleamA:

I'm going to work on the Trans mount tomorrow

Again thanks for all the help!! It should be running in about 2-3 weeks I will send you some pics when I'm done

p.s. I will have more questions before I'm done  :icon_smile_big:

Did you have to change your Oil Pump Pickup?
And did what size radiator did you pick up?

TwistedShifter

I do believe with the big block oil pans their are 2 different sizes, 3/8 and the 1/2 hemi pick up. Be careful when ordering to get the right one.

i tried 3 different pickups (i had all three) not sure which part number it was on the one that worked. sorry. there are many different ones available, the one which came with my oil pan did not work!
