I was looking on rockauto.com for some parts for my Charger. I was browsing around the "catalog" and saw that they offer long block engines from Marshall Engines. A remanufactured 440 long block shipped to my door is $2,344.59, and if I would return a core, I would get a $500.00 refund, making the total cost $1,844.59. This sounds like a cheap way to get a rebuilt motor, even if it is a low compression smog motor.
At this time, most of my budget is going into paint, body, and interior work, so with an inexpensive replacement engine, I am thinking I could enjoy driving my car for a couple of years before the "dream engine" build (stroker motor).

Have any of you ever purchased a long block Marshall reman engine?  Experiences?

What are your thoughts/opinions?

Thank you!

you can get them cheaper by going through marshall. about 150 bucks cheaper. i just did a quick search on marshall's site and they are 2100+ then 500 for core charge. i don't have any exp. with them, but like you said... whats best for budget. its still a 440 :2thumbs:

WARNING: A little word to the wise on "Reman" long blocks/complete engines....Unless you know the builder/remanufacturer well, we have a 350 C.I. Small block Chevy in the shop from JASPER engines that is bored .080, sleeved in one cylinder, heads have three (3) different size valves, some with oversize stems instead of the correct valve guides, the crank was turned .050 Rods/mains, the block was "Align bored" instead of correctly taking material off the bolt side, they simply bored the saddles out .030 so you would need .030 larger on the backside of main bearings and .050 on the oil side, for a total of .080 larger bearings and we can't seem to find them. The Big ends of the rods were done the same way...Simply bored out .020 along with the .050 on the oil side.

Freeze plugs were cheap and no screw in oil galley plugs....Just FYI.

$1,844.59 for a reman 440 longblock, shipped to your door ? (after core return of course)

Therein by itself lies the question, as to exactly WHAT constitutes a reman by their definition, especially since under any type of scrutiny, or breakdown, along parts & labor operations performed vrs monies spent, it becomes MORE a little "thin" in my mind ?

No matter, it'll run I guess ?
If you just want the car to roll and drive under it's own power ?
** find out what has to be done during installation, and by whom(licensed tech) etc., etc., to meet the warranty, and have at it.

IMO, no offense intended
* just have your eyes open as to what it is, and don't go dreaming about it being a "440" .....so it must have "some" performance potential, because it won't !!  These type Engines are typically very dis-appointing power-wise, and do not respond well to any Bolt ons/Cam changes etc., etc., that merely void the whatever warranty you may be entitled to.

I have a Marshall 440 reman still bolted to the pallet and wrapped in plastic that came with my car when i got it.  I have all the info (head and block casting #'s) at home, but i believe it is a 1978 with the hardened valve seats in the heads.  I called Marshall asking about it, and about the only thing they could tell me is that it was a stock rebuild (low compression) with a stock cam grind for 1978.  When i got closer to getting ready for the engine, i was going to post here and ask for suggestions...but here is what i've been thinking:

I also have 2 disassembled 440 engines that date code to 1973 with heads.  both engine are missing one piston and rod...all of the parts i have look good, but are dirty from sitting in a barn for 10 plus years.

My options are to take the Marshall engine and upgrade it with 6-pack pistons and a decent cam for cruising and street driving, or take the 2 parts engines and have one built...i'm leaning towards upgrading the Marshall engine unless I find something strange when i open it up.

For now i'm just leaving it sit on the pallet wrapped in plastic...i have plenty of other things to do to the car and spend money on for now :icon_smile_big:

Thank you for the responses. Since my current 400 is in running condition (she smokes a little) I think I will just run her until I have the money for an engine build.

Notice it says "They have yet to pay the mechanic".....THIS is why we refuse to cover ANYTHING when customers supplyt their own engines, be it used, new, or reman....

Reading the above, IMO as a Shop Owner, is pretty darn comical bordering on Hilarious  :brickwall:

I've said it before, and I will say it again, things happen in this world for Time vrs Money, and there is NO WAY to expect that those "things" are going to happen, properly, or competently.....without a reasonable allocation of funds, in order for one to do so.
Basically,
there is no SOMETHING ....for NOTHING .....whether it be in rebuilding Engines or otherwise.

Although,
I do feel sympathy for the people who purchased those Engines, as is said..."Sympathy" is best found somewhere between "SH*T" and "SYPHALLIS" in the dictionary.

$1800 for a REMANUFACTURED 440 Mopar Engine ???
Come on now.......what does anybody really believe they are getting in the way of remanufactured ?
