Well - just made a huge life changing decision. With the way the world is going I decided to jump in with both feet...    swore in to the USAF yesterday. Currently waiting on contract for one of my selected AFSCs.  Passed full physical with 111111 and scored a 98 overall on the ASVAB

Wow, Congrats on your decision! You have no idea how many times I've wished that I had done that instead of letting that little piece of triangle shaped fur get the best of me.

Have you thought about moving to Tasmania?  The only way to get away from it then would be to swim for it!!

Congrats, gotta son in the USAF right now. Loves it. Training to be only a handful of folks who can work on only a handful of special planes or something. Anyway, he about ot get paid big time. I told him to hope and pray the American Taxpayer can hold out so he can. My cousin just lost his Contract though and is now looking for a job.

My compliments. Take advantage of every bit of training you can get. Also consider taking a JC/college class every semester/quarter. This will serve you well when it's promotion time AND you're building your academic chops for later in life........on the military's dime.

That will be very difficult for the first 24 or so months because of the training pipeline I'll be going into. But after that I have full intention to work on my master's degree (already have a B.S.).

I selected the USAF because their recruiter pushed education as a building block to a career as well as life - which I agree with. Also, the AF would take me (USMC said I was too old, Army offered me jobs that sucked(ie. truck driver), and I never thought I would want to do the Navy thing...    just not my cup of tea) so the USAF said "Hey, you got a 98 on your ASVAB - you're a smart cookie - we want you"

So The idea is to do a 4-6 year contract depending on what AFSC rolls my way and then drop packets after 3 years for OTS and other branch OCS programs.

Career wise if I commission then I'll stay in - otherwise it's out and into law enforcement

I see your profile says you're 26.  One thing to consider is the age limit for OCS.  It takes a while for the application to go through and I believe the Marine Corps and Navy have an age limit of 29.  Army/AF I don't know.  However, some of the guys I went to OCS with who were prior enlisted got waivers.  I don't think any of them were older than 30 though.  Just something to consider.  Waivers take time too.  You may want to apply sooner rather than later.  :Twocents: :2thumbs:

Understood - I asked about that and as I understand it - the USAF allows up to 32 and the clock usually stops when you enlist - so it requires a waiver but as long as you are not coming in "off the street" at 32 you should be good.  I know a USAF TSgt who just got picked up through the Army OCS at the ripe young age of 33. But he was enlisted for 14 years in the USAF.

It is similar to federal jobs that have a maximum age (ie CBP, FBI, DEA require you to be in by 37yo...   but if you have 6 years active military you tack on those 6 years so you need to be hired by 43yo)

But yes - I plan to apply to OTS and OCS as soon as I can - downside it I am eligable after 1 year of active service - but that puts me mid-pipeline for my AFSC.

We'll see what happens.

Congratulations.  :2thumbs:

I tried the Air Force, but during my physical they taped me and said I was too fat.  I think the lady did it wrong myself, so joined the Army National Guard instead. Your should like the Air Force.  From everything I heard boot camp is the easiest and they have the best food.

A nice career move, sir. Even if you find the Air Force is not for you, it makes a nice resume' addition. Good luck and I hope you really enjoy the experience.

Air force has "Basic Training" (easy training) Boot Camp is a Marine term.
I just retired from the USMC after 28 years of both Active and Reserve time. You should love the AF, it's more like a civilain job. 30-40 hour week. Alot of times I had to work 30 days in a row without a day off.

I was taped by a recruiter about 18 months ago when I was 320lbs...   obviously way too heavy...    went back 2 months ago and weighed in at 175lbs...   so I dont think motivation will be a problem.

Yes, basic in the USAF is pretty light - but the pipelines for PJ and CCT / SOWT are fairly challenging...     TAC-P and SERE are not too difficult - and EOD is a mental challenge for any branch service member.

The other benefit of the USAF STS units is the schooling opportunity. PJ/CCT standard schools are Airborne, SERE, SF Dive course, and HALO - most also go through Army Ranger school.  If those don't look good on a resume I dont know what does.    :yesnod:

I was in the AF around 1981, basic training was like being at a resort. They will feed you really well, I gained 50 lbs before I left training.
