i cannot find it now, but I remember reading a book which mentioned that they only used the 2 73 mustangs in making that movie. The one that got wrecked, and the one he drove away from the car wash at the end.

chargerman69

I read about that to, maybe cause they wrecked so many nice cars they didn't have the money for anymore mustangs

"They" was all just the one guy who starred in the movie.

No big studios.  It was his show, his money, his cars.  He was a self-made junkyard owner who wanted to make movies.  He didn't have permission for the locations to shoot half that footage in the movie.  What looks like real traffic, really is half the time.

I have a behind the scenes DVD of this movie.   The part where he's flying through the dealership And a cop loses it and crashes Into a bunch of brand new Cadillacs... That was a big Oops..... :brickwall:  He spoke with the dealership and asked to race through the parking lot and thats it.  He had to personally buy all the cars they ran Into!
Some pretty cool stuff, but tragic how he died doing another chase scene...

Thought I saw in the commentary by his wife,he died in filming the movie"The junkman",some sort of cable on a set for a stunt snapped and killed him(decapitated him).Maybe I'm wrong.

If I remember right he died during the filming of gone in 60 seconds 2. A water tower that was set to fall went prematurely and crushed him. Such a great film maker. RIP

I seem to remember something about "Junkman" and a telephone pole(Or maybe it WAS a water tower?), falling on Toby and killing him. gotta watch my special edition DVD again now..

Yeah, that water tower thing sounds familiar to me too.

projectanimal

Yup, water tower being held by wire.... Wire broke, not sure if tower or wire was the killing factor.   :brickwall:   That sad part is they released what was filmed for that movie and it ends with the tower going down.... I believe they only used the far shot, so you see the tower fall behind a building.   Will have to watch it again.   :-\

i believe it was actually a pair of 71 mustangs done up to look like 73s (same as the challenger 000-GAL is a 70 done up as a 74).

Mike DC

Not sure about the one they kept nice.  I remember reading that the infamous stunt crasher was a red '71 Mach-1 that had been hit in the rear.

Toby de-skinned the whole car (including quarters & roof skin) to put the cage in it.  It looks like smaller diameter tubing (probably to hide it better), maybe 1.5" diameter.  The underside was skid-plated and the drivetrain was chained down.
