So several friends and I are looking at getting out of our region this yr and going far away.  After seeing some recent New Zealand show picks was thinking of that, but the wife nicked that for guys' wkend :-\ :smilielol: :smilielol: :slap:.  So, what is the largest show-cruz in US, Detroit Woodward or Hot August Nights by numbers, heavy mopar numbers and cool place to go?

Sections of Hot Rod power tour that I have been on in previous yrs have been nice, but feel rushed.

Woodward remains on the top of my list, never been, but I understand Detroit is less than desirable to be going to these days.  Is that really true?

I also understand the Cruzing the coast (gulf coast) is really great but likely can't take a entire week off.

Any ideas or experience with big events?

I haven't been to the Reno one but Woodward is supposed to be the largest by virtue of sheer physical size and number of spectators.  Does that mean it has the most number of participating cars?  Of that I'm not sure.  But there is a lot to do and see there I can attest to that.

just visiting or taking the car??  i've been told that Hot August Nights limits the cars and there is a waiting list to attend with your car..
don't get me wrong, you can take your car but can't cruise with everyone else

I travel through Detroit probably twice a month for my business.  To be honest many parts of Detroit remind me of footage you may see on TV of third world, war ravaged countries, no joke.  The only thing you see to still remind you that you are still is the US are the abundance of pregnant crack whores roaming the streets.  If I am not mistaken the Police Chief recently released a statement to the effect, you call 911, you may be on your own, they will do their best to get there.  Even some of the nicer suburbs are starting to decline.  Many who are able are fleeing the area leaving empty homes and business in their wake.

Are there still some nice parts of the city, yea. . kind of.  I will say this, you do not want to be downtown after sunset in small groups.  Many establishments down there will actually warn people to stay in in large groups after dark. Oh, and carry nothing smaller than a .45 caliber.  :2thumbs: Of course Dino lives there, and would know much more than I would just passing through a couple times a month.

Hot August Nights is a shadow of what it once was. Badly managed and full of scandal in the past, the organization was gutted. The non-profit running it paid themselves millions of dollars over the years in the name of "charity". They were run out of Reno after leaving a huge black eye on the town's citizens. The event was reduced from 10 hot nights to 5 boring ones today. The new organization is trying, but I've been told there are struggles, and logistic issues remain.

And from my personal experience before the changes in 2012, there were virtually no Mopars for 100 miles. It's a Chevy show, and a few Mustangs. If you just have to attend, the only Mopar event is one night at the A&W, it's a free, a great time for the Tribe of Chrysler. But otherwise I think that you really need to want to see 6000 Chevies to make the effort to get to Reno.

In other words skip this one.

I live in the Detroit area and have my whole life.. I have only missed 1 Woodward Dream Cruise since it's inception. On WDC weekend, there are 40,000 plus vehicles from all over the country. Most years there are over 1,00,000 spectators. the Dream cruise starts ( unofficially ) 2 week ends before. People and their cars start cruising up and down Woodward Ave, spend money in local establishments and have a good safe time.

This being said, time to clear up some misconceptions, The dream Cruise DOESN'T EVEN TAKE PLACE in the city of Detroit. The route starts on Woodward, north of the city limits, goes through some of the toniest burbs in the area and ends up in Pontiac, 16 miles north. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO SAFETY ISSUE along the route or in the area around. It is very organized, well policed. Much to do, all the cities along the route provide many car related activities.

In the city of Detroit, the down town area and mid town are starting to come alive. yes there are areas to stay away from, like any where else. We go into the city frequently, one just needs to be aware. If you come to the Dream cruise, you don't have to go any where near any of this.

I reluctantly admit we are looking at hopping on a plane, so we are open anywhere in US (wife directive).  I am a full believer of take your car to shows  (and kids) to support the hobby.  So it bothers me, but it just does not make since (to me) to drive time more days than time at a show.

So what other very large shows with cruz'ing and community are out there?

Ditto, was in the big D yesterday.  Downtown is doing pretty damn good all things considering but yeah the cruise won'tbe anywhere near the city.  Besides, there's so many people there that thugs stay far far away.  Too many cops around for their liking.

IF I am in town that weekend, and that is still an if, I will be happy to load up ny car.  Baker has first dibs btw so that leaves two comfy or three little people!   :icon_smile_big:

Good news is that a/c should be up and running by then.   :2thumbs:

She's actually seems fairly tolerant of the kitty's antics (the single time I met her was when she yelled at him for letting the dog bark at 2am and she had to work the next morning-but that would have gone much worse in my house).  I do wonder how the neighbors will love it though?  Is there a nazi-like hoa there Tufcat?

:2thumbs: One of the guys likely going is also a long time die hard Charger guy (not on this forum) so it would be nice to cross paths with other Charger people.  The other is a GN/Cheby guy, but he's OK  :smilielol: :smilielol: :smilielol: (Be told I will likely have another 87 GN of sorts too)  I appreciate the invite and hospitality offers.  I will keep you guys posted (hope to buy plane tickets/hotel reservations within the month or so, I think we are still heading there).

Ok, So I have ask the easy question.  My buddy's are also into "Contruction & old Architecture" so that is where it gets a hassle, we are likely at least one day wanting to cruz the City to see some of the cool old stuff before it is all completely gone.  That I assume is likely not the best plan depending on areas, so futher discussions/guidance is likely needed.

Could I talk to one of you on the phone or PM that live there with your suggestions of nice or architecturally cool places to stay near or within the (north of town) cruz areas?

Stay away from the east side of the city, everything else is fine.  If you see urban decay that makes you think twice then turn around.  The only nice architecture left in that part of town is in ruins, burnt in '67.

Downtown is where you want to be, it's really not bad there at all and you'll see tons of architecture, it's not all gone.

Palmer Park, Palmer Woods, Woodward, just south of 8 Mile, west side of Woodward is beautiful, grand old homes, well kept. There is a Frank Lloyd Wright home on 7 Mile rd just west of Woodward. I know the city and the burbs, I am an architecture fan, myself. I know where all the FLW homes on the area are.

Hey XS29, I reckon you should really take at least a week if you can otherwise its just a flying visit especially when you'de trying to fit in arch/historical tours. I always try to get to the local botanical gardens as well if there is a chance in a different large city, always worth a look at ''not just all cars'' gig. I've had a few mates go over to Hot August Nights ,Pomona, Speedweek at Bonniville and different car events , they always enjoy it, a group of them even went to Miss Tulsarama a few years back too, I'd be planning an itinerany of events and take a poll with your buddies for what appealed best.                                                                           But if you are planning to head a bit further,  come out here for Beach Hop, its massive, and the Leadfoot Festival is on the week before held at Steve Millen's ranch. I've been to about 6 or 7 Hops and they are so cool and great Family outings.  Google them for  some info.  You too Dan 68X426! I reckon you'd fit in well

XS29  don't know if this is exactly what you are looking for but the Syracuse Nationals is suppose to be huge. Almost 8,000 cars and almost 90,000 people. It is all makes and models.  Never been there, but planning on it this year.  http://rightcoastcars.com/syracuse-nationals.php   You'd be just a few hours away from NYC if you had the family and wanted to go there.

well, your wife won't allow it but you should come to the power Big Meet in Västeras, sweden
