Do you need a key to remove the lock cylinder from the Ignition switch on a 68?

I never thought you could service that switch Are you sure you can take the cylinder out?
68 440 4 speed 4.10

Supposedly, but I've gotten them out without one.

I fiddled around with it a few minutes, finally got it out without a key.
