V-6 vs V-8

Okay here is the deal.  I've gotten myself into a debate with a V-8 engine hater.  Basically his argument is massive powered V-8 Challengers, Camaros, Mustangs, are barely beating V-6 powered cars.  Of course he lists a few V-6 cars, (370 Z), (G37) (is350), etc.  Because of this he declares V-8's are pathetic and failures, etc.  He says we have nothing to be proud of.

What say you?

You can say: last week i bought a v6 engine, because i needed a new starter for my v8 powered dodge.  :D
Nothing beats the sound of a v8 rumble. The end. :yesnod:

Pull your car out of the garage and smoke him.  Then see what he says.  V6 cars are fine, but they have to be purpose built to be a performer.  It also costs more to get the same power of of a v6 than it does a v8.  Only benefits that I see to a v6 is:

  • light weight
  • fuel mileage

    • they do make decent power
    • more reliable than a 4 cyl.
    cheaper

I do give the big three credit for what they are able to do with a V6, but in most cases the torque is WAY down.

Here is a case in point for a Chebby guy-

""Hey guy, my Camaro V6 has a lot of hp"" -

LT V6
323 hp
278 torque

SS V8
426 hp
420 torque

Chally-

SXT V6
305 hp
268 torque

RT V8
375 Hp
410 torque

SRT8
470 hp
470 torque

let him have the v6.  more v8's for us.

Why would you waste your time trying to debate an issue with someone like that? Obviously he doesn't GET it, probably never will. Let him revel in his ignorance.

I've never been able to understand that sort of mentality. Really no point trying to have a discussion with someone like that. :brickwall:

My dad once told me that when V6s were being advertised in his day they said, "The power of a V8 with the fuel economy of a V6." But he found the opposite to be true - the power of a V6 with the mpg of a V8.

V6/V8 is basically the same debate as "why is a 500ci BB better than a high-revving SB with the same theoretical HP figure?"

People who think a V6 is equal to a V8 with the same HP numbers are getting their car knowledge from the sidelines and magazines.  There is more to power than the stopwatch figures.  Sit in the cars and drive them for real, and the difference is clear.  More displacement = more torque = fun.

its equaivlent to the days of imports the 4 bangers claiming (myth) that their stockers are beating old muscle cars!!!  I remember FandF came otu and folks with civics with stock 4 bangers, loud pipes, etc and they would tell stories hwo they beat a 2nd gen charger or some of the old muscle cars from the heyday on the street.

Those things put out 100HP max and with a loud pipe maybe 105hp  :rotz:

Tell the guy he is absolutely right and pathetic failure is the reason they don't use V8's in Top Fuel or Pro Stock or NASCAR or F1 or, oops, wait a minute, all of those classes use 8 cylinder engines.  Never mind.

JB400

Go rent 2 cars of the same car with the only difference is the engine.  Line them up, and let him see which one is better.  Better yet, don't just drag race them, put them through a real world test.

mauve66

there is a guy here in town with a stock 4 cyl honda with a plate that says V8SRSLO, i laugh every time i see it.  My kid thinks his '12 v6 rustaro will smoke my charger, i've driven both, it won't

i guess a v12 lambo doesn't stand a chance against those great v6 cars he lists huh??

ok lets take a n/a engine v8,it has 8 intake ports that flow 400 cfm @ 28 in water that is enough flow to make 103 hp per cyl x 8 =824 hp
now lets do a v6 engine it has 6 intake ports that flow the same 400 cfm-------------------------------------103 hp per cyl x 6 =618 hp
it would take 532 cfm on the v6 to do the same as the v8------good luck with that.

Well said Mike...Too many get all hung up on Huge HP numbers. Sure, the V6's of today might weld a few of the V8's to the ground, but certainly not all of them. If it weren't for the fact that many of the V6's he listed already have the money invested every month in the form of a payment, he would certainly be a V8's fan, but money is king, and many of the 4Cyl. and V6 cround tend to want to invest more of it to try and prove something to the V8 croud. Most of the 4Cyl/V6 cround followers only know what the factory can do with one, while many of the V8 croud not only know what the factory can do, but how to make plenty more power with the V8. Ever called up Summit Racing and asked for a set of pistons/cam/heads for a newer V6? Now try it for the V8...Funny how that happens.

Didn't they use a Buick 455 to spool up the engines on the SR71?

Back N Black

I took my charger to work and some young kid pulled in next to me and asked what size engine was in the charger, i said 7.3 liter. What's in your Honda, he said 2 liter, i said only milk comes in 2 liters.  :D

Keep in mind that lots of these cars with smaller motors don't weigh as much.  Just tell the guy with the Honda "lets trade motors"   How well will your Honda motor make my car perform?

4 Cyl. @650 HP....

6 Cyl. @ 650 HP....

V8 @ 650 HP....

4Cyl, and V6 aren't gonna last very long. Nowhere NEAR as long as a V8 will. Just like a 1000 HP Locomotive engine will last longer @ 2500 C.I. than a 600 C.I. V8 with 1000 HP...It's all relative.

Can't help it, when I saw what that idiot posted on a youtube vid it annoyed me.  So I responded and the debate began.
