Muffler to floor clearance

How close is too close between a muffler and the floor pan?

I will be putting in a TTI system, as you guys know, the muffler hangers that come with that system are ridiculous.  I'm going with a stock-like hanger, but the muffler seems pretty close to the floor.....like touching it.

Thinking about redoing the rubber straps on the factory hanger, making them longer to give myself a little more clearance.  But how much do I need?

got 3 inch TTis on mine  ,  can measure the Clarence  , if that's any help ??  Prolly be at the weekend now ,  

think your better off using the TTi hangers ,  the rubber on the stock OEM  , doubt it will be strong enough    will make it hang too low i think  :shrug: , the TTi  three inch ,  is  heavy

Dynomax ultraflos here, they come with their own giant hangers too. There is about 1/4", if that, between the highest point on the mufflers and the floor. Ive got gator-liner sprayed on the bottom and on the inside the as well as dynomax on top of that. No problems thus far with melting anything.

I've got the factory undercoating on, with a little more sprayed on for good measure.

I replaced the factory straps on the hangers with some really tough straps....they won't break or tear......which is why maybe the mufflers sit a little high.  There isn't very much "sag" to the rubber straps, which is why I might need to lengthen them a little bit.

Maybe about 1" of clearance is what to shoot for.  I don't want any banging or excessive heat transfer happening betweeen the muffler and the floor.

I can see that you used the big monster hangers provided by TTI and had them adjusted to the lowest hole on the rubber strap.  Is that the best way to make the TTI pipes fit, or do you feel you could have adjusted the muffler closer to the floor if you wanted to?

Wonder how your muffler clearance compares to stock?

i'm trying to remember about that  , been  about 10 years since i  fitted it  ,  they come with the rubber part in the second to last hole , when i tried to fit like this  , the muffler , i felt was too close to the floor , prolly much less than an inch , & the front pipes were too close to the torsion bar cross member , for my liking  , ( might of been ok with headers ))) ( was going for headers , but thats another story !!)  then i tried to install the  tail pipes & was no good ,  too close to the rear shock absorber  cross member  ,  prolly less than 1/4 inch , then it would  put too much down ward stress of the tail pipe hanger bracket mounting  & would have to bend the tail pipe hanger , i assumed , was not happy at all , so lowered it , to the lowest hole , &  every thing fitted great , ( with a 2-1/2" system , could of easily of used the second to last whole  & would of been enough clearence  )

cant say what the stock exhaust was like , cause mine  had a true 2-1/2" duel system & glass packs on when i bought  it , right up till i stripped it for the resto

I think about 1.5" should do it.

The rubber strap material I used is too thick and tough.  Some thinner softer stuff is needed, or I need to go longer, so it can sag easier.

don't think i would use a softer rubber strap  , just a longer one  , what i would do , find out how much it streches with the weight on the muffler/exhaust ,fit the exhaust down pipes  to manifolds , &  tail pipes ( bolt up /fit exhaust ), then with a jack & sutable lenght of wood & two wooden blocks each side, lift the muffers / exhaust together , just a tiny bit 1/8"  maybe less , just to take the slop / sag out of it ,    thats where the muffler hanger needs to be with the full weight of the system on in
