Good morning gang,

I currently have an Eldebrock carb on my 440 and it's OK. I've been think about having the stock carb rebuilt and reinstalling it when I do the heat block of mod.
Your opinions please?

If everything is mainly stock and you do any cool weather driving, are you sure you want to block off the heat passage?

twodko

Hi Ghoste,

I live in Norcal and rarely see weather cold enough to justify leaving it as is. Its far more useful avoiding fuel boil off and having to crank & crank to get started again....embarrassing too. An electric fuel pump would solve that issue but for this climate the heat bypass is best.

Then by all means yeah, I would block it off too.  Nothing wrong with putting the stock carb back on either although my personal experience has been that Carter type carbs seem to boil fuel off easier than Holleys.  I have no explanation for that and I may be the only one its worked out for that way.  I do like the Carters for a stock installation as they are kind of a plug and play carb.  Very simple and solid you know.

Chris had original carb rebuilt & had it on for a short time but pulled it in favor of the Holley he had on before .

What's ballpark for a Holley 750 cfm? The nice thing about the stock carb is all the linkage hooks right up.....no surprises.

New or used , I would look at a new Proform over anything else , Mancini has the best pricing & the tuning is unmatched

I agree, performance wise the pro form is great. Very pleased with mine, definitely doesn't look stock though.

Will my OEM air cleaner fit on a Proform? No hood clearance problems?

Isn't the Carter a smaller opening than the Holley style?

Yep...same dimensions as a Holley just with the air horn removed. I had the stock HP pie pan on my Proform 750 with no problems. :2thumbs:

Cold starting is a bit tricker with the heat crossover blocked but yeah it sure beats having the fuel boil out of the damn thing all the time!

What Eddy do you have on it Tom?  I have the 1407 but I don't like it.

The OO, who we bought the car from, put it on the car. I have the original box so I'll get the model number to you Dino.

Hey Dino, I've the same Edlebrock as you have. My complaint with it is I can be driving around at any speed and for no reason it hiccups, for lack of a better description. It just skips a beat so to speak. I've had it checked out, tuned, replaced the jets.......zip. No rhyme or reason for it. I'll either replace the rebuilt stocker or buy a Proform. :shruggy:

I am not DINO..thankfully, but have you checked the fuel pump for about 5psi pressure?

Running the 1407 as well and that's what is on it now, my stock Holley base plate is not compatible with the proform main body I got.

Before buying something I would check the above and make sure the filter isn't clogged or pinched line Etc. You may have already done all this but it doesn't cost anything and if one of these things is wrong the new carb will not change anything.

Oh come on now piggy, you'd be a few notches higher on the society ladder if you were me.   :icon_smile_big:

Tom mine does the same.  It runs fine when I cruise but it will stumble most of the time when leaving slowly from a stop or it'll hiccup when I give it too much throttle.  Oh and I'm lucky to get 10 mpg out of it as well, on the highway with 2:96 gears, but I'm not sure a proform would do better.

I just cleaned up my old TQ and it's starting to look great, I'm rebuilding it over the winter and will be bolting it on next season.

I'm thinking same-same Dino.

Hey Dino, If the TQ still needs some cleaning you're welcome to use my dunk tank & parts washer. You saw what it did for my Carter AVS.  ;)

I think the explanation is simple, the holleys get a good bit of air around the bowl whereas the edelbrocks don't(running one myself). They get a lot of heat transfer to the bowls being on the side of the main body.
I am planning on doing the heat block off as well.  I never ran a carter, but I think they are similar in build to the edelbrocks,  are they not?

Go with a proform, you wont be disappointed.

Also id personally go with the race version, you get a little more CFM due to no choke/horn and you really dont need the choke.

Thanks for the offer!  I used some engine degreaser and simply soaked it for a minute or two. The carb was much cleaner then I thought.

Now comes the hard part of taking it apart and putting it back together with the new seals and gaskets.

I just went through this same thing. I've got a 383 with comp cam and mild head work- I had a #1407 Edelbrock 750 that was getting worn out and starting to leak fuel. Had my original Carter AVS #4401 rebuilt and restored and put it on. Ran ok but could tell it didn't have nearly the top end power as the 750 eddy probably because the stock one is a 625.

Everyone on here reccomended a Holley, Quick Fuel, or Proform. Bought an Aluminum 770 Holley Street Avenger from jegs on sale for $319 free shipping. Took it to my mechanic and had him put it on and get it dialed in along with my timing. All I've got to say is night and day difference. Throttle response is instant compared to the eddy and carter plus mid range and top end it pulls so much harder.

I'm not sure if it was all because of the carb or not, we added a 3/4" spacer, H pipe balance tube, and took off the dual snorkel and added the unsilenced round air cleaner with no snorkels so I'm sure that stuff helped as well.
