Since the definitions seems so blurry these days it won't be a very accurate poll but whatever.  How do you class these cars?

hatersaurusrex

I've always filed them under 'other' as well as 'awesome'.   2 seater like a Sports Car? Check.  Small/medium body with an American-made V8 like a Muscle Car? Check.  Open grille, coke-bottle styling, and a relatively short wheelbase like a Pony Car??  Check.

I think of it as a two seat ponycar too really.

Because it's a smaller, 2 seater I will have to say a sports car. Not by today's standards, but back in the 60's it was small compared to what was available. The Darts & Valiants were compact cars but are now land yachts compared to today's compacts.

These 1968 prototype AMX pics are cool, I've never seen them before.....

You can see where the Gremlin came from.  I will have to agree as well, sports car.  That's what it was originally designed to be classified as.  Why change it? :shruggy:

When I was a kid, maybe 10 or so, there was a local guy that had one that was bright orange with a white stripe. It had wide Cragar SS mags in the back & white letter tires. It also had a huge CB antenna on the back that had a matching, orange light on the tip.

Now if AMC had kept the prototype nose instead of the fugly one it ended up with, it would have been a really cool car.

GO SELL CRAZY SOMEWHERE ELSE WE ARE ALL STOCKED UP HERE

The Javelin was the pony car.  The 69-70 AMX was up there with the Corvette.
Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.  Especially if they have access to the internet.

AMX is a muscle car. And awesome.

A short wheel muscle car, an inch shorter wheel base than the Vette, but still a muscle car. The designers had no pretense of it being a sports car like the Vette. And there was only V8 power installed.

What matters in particular is that kickass 390 motor that was stuffed inside. That combination makes it a muscle car. :Twocents:

Here is there AMX 3 prototype.  Every website I looked up considers the AMX a sportscar and a direct competitor to the Vette.  I think this car might back that up.  http://www.american-motors.de/en/history/60s/

What about the 71-74 Javelin based AMX's? They were 4 seaters with V8's up to 401ci. A good friend of mine had a 71 AMX in high school that was a pretty good good runner. They were size wise more like the typical muscle car of the era and nothing you would compare to a vette.

A red-headed stepchild that Chrysler got stuck with.

Brightyellow69rtse

love me some amx!  i consider it a muscle car.

Ghoste

The 71-74 was more like a trim level on a model than a model of its own, at least for the purpose of this question.  As for a stepchild that Chrysler got stuck with, yeah but paybacks a bitch aint it cuz now Chrysler has a nice Italian stepfather who considers Ma Mopar lucky to him after she got dumped by that German.

I look at the back end of the AMX concept and I see the front of a Dodge Deora!  :Twocents:
I've never owned anything but a MoPar. Can you say that?

JB400

I don't know why everyone is so negative about Chrysler getting AMC.  They got Jeep.  That has been one brand that has been able to hold its own.  Of course the Wranglers do good, everyone likes their ruggedness and aftermarket niche.  But, the Cherokee has done just as well.  Other than the axles being weak for a few years,  I haven't seen much wrong with them.  I see just as many of them on the road as I do pickups.  For everyone wanting a 4 wheel drive, they are on top or very close on everyone's list.
As far as the AMC brand, the only thing that hurt it was management.  The cars themselves weren't bad.  Actually, top of the list as far as options.  Another thing that hurts them is the aftermarket,

Ghoste

They also got a state of the art (at the time) manufacturing plant.

On the AMX there is a bulge line over the rear tire that seems to pretty closely match the camaro's line of the rear quarter panel. Same style of front end with the point in the middle, etc. But maybe it's just me  :icon_smile_big:

I know what it looks like............................................................................ an AMX :smilielol:

I think AMC knocked the ball out of the park in the styling department, as well as the fun/ H.P. department. The suspension design guys droped the ball and kicked it into their own end zone whith that god awfull trunion front end! I'm pretty sure the interior design guys were on the same team as the chassis guys! The dash and gauges in those things are ugly!

Other than that I love them. Drop them in the "pony car" group. They are fun cars for sure!
I may be schizophrenic but at least I have us!
