This might seem sill but I'm confused about what direction the head of the pin should be facing. I would have guess downward to shed water but mine were installed upward.

This is the passenger side lower hinge on the 1973 charger just about to tap the pin in. I have it facing the way I found the original.

it looks like it says lft on the hinge  :shruggy:

Well it was taken directly off the passenger side, so could it have been changed at one time?. And actually it says "L RT"

pin head allways top.

On this case, you have it backwards. Correct, that's passenger ( teethed weels must face up ).

Pins are not always installed with the head up.  I don't know about your car but p or down pin is dictated by the amount of space in the door jamb.  A lot of cars have the upper pin installed upside down so both pins need to be moved towards the center of the door to remove them.  In a lot of cars the curvature of the door skin makes it impossible to move the pin the other way.

Regardless of what direction it goes, water can still creep in so make sure you slatter the whole thing in grease when you're done.

interesting. But pins aren't assemblied OFF the door ?, so what cares the curvatures on doors ? you never remove pins to remove the door, even less with hinge ON DOOR

well, anyway this specific case is anyway HEAD UP LOL

True Nacho but that is in the factory, not in the body shop.  It is much easier and thus cheaper for the shop to remove the pins and leave the hinges in place.  If the same door needs to go back in the car then it woud take lot more work to adjust the hinge bolts than to remove and reinstall a hinge pin.

I have 3 3rd gens and all of them vary on the direction of the pins. I'm gonna go with head at the top since it just makes sense to me and I have the option. That explanation is quite interesting Indygen!
