http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/RT-/271075667315?forcev4exp=true   teachable moment.  how much could you afford to pay for this 69 charger, restore it and sell it and at least break even?  parameters:  you do all the work yourself and you have to buy in all the parts (nothing squirrelled away in the garage).  i'm not talking concourse just a nice driver.  i'm betting you would be better off to buy a more complete car.

Ghoste

It's up in another thread too but you are nearly always better off buying a complete car.

hawkeye

i saw the other thread and that is what got me to thinking that it looked like a good deal.  then i realized just what you would have to do to get it going and unless you had a parts/donor car, it just wouldn't be worth the effort.  hawkeye

Ghoste

As you point out though, if you do everything yurself it makes a big difference and we should remember there are some people who like the restoration part best.

hawkeye

i always figured the restoration phase was just like foreplay,  it's alright but it's just something you have to go through to get to the good stuff.

Ghoste

I've known a couple of sick bastards that are all excited through the entire resto phase but once the car is one the road they get bored with it fast.  In no time at all the redone car is gone and there is another pile of rusty junk sitting in their shop.

I used to be one of those.  I love doing restorations but I could not care less about 99% of all the cars, vans, bikes and whatever else I restored.  With the Charger it's a bit different.  I love driving it and I drive it a lot.  I would enjoy the resto as well but would miss the driving part.  Since I have very little spare time with work and school restos are out of the question so hopefully it'll last for a while as is.

First problem with this is you almost NEVER buy and restore one of these type cars to "Sell it and break even"....

Some right here have begun with way less, but they weren't thinking about "Breaking even" money wise.

i agree it has to be a labor of love.  that said, there has to be some measure of the best route when restoring any car.  my point was, just because the entry price appears to be low, it doesn't necessarily make it a good deal.

What we tend to forget here though is that a good deal is really relative.  Yes a mint R/T for under $20K will be a good deal in anyone's book but outside of that, we all think a bit differently.  See I would have paid a few grand more to get the car I did, just because it was everything I wanted and no other Charger gave me the feeling this one did when I saw it.

The car on ebay tipped 4 grand which is quite a lot for what it is but for a guy looking to do some bodywork without having to weld or do major repairs and assemble it himself this might be just the ticket.

All that car is good for is if you have a complete rusty car and then swap all the trim and interior pieces over.
Sold my Charger unfortunately....never got it finished.

Yet, buying a Rusted out hulk of an R/T that needs EVERYTHING for $8500.00 with all the bells and whistles, but will cost twice as much in parts because it's a Full on, badass, 100 point resto because it's an R/T, is a better deal?

I've seen $6K rust buckets SELL....

I can already tell with the metal and such that's clearly been replaced, there's more than $4K in labor/bodywork/paint...Done right? Done wrong? Still done and paid for.

No doubt there's much more than $4K in that car, but as you and I know, that doesn't mean much when it comes to resale value.

No fender tag or dash vin, perfect for a non original resto or a GL.

check out how many hits it has had.  how many other cars could generate that much interest?

And only 13 bids.
Still 2 days left. I'd bet that more will come later in the game.

Without a doubt.  But there will be that many more hits on the ad too.  Seems to me like a lot are looking but mostly just that, looking.  I think it'll sell in the end though.

VegasCharger

If you read near the bottom of the listing it says "I am looking to get $6000. for this car" yet he /she has no reserve set on it. hmmm will they pull out of the deal if it doesn't reach 6k?

hatersaurusrex

aaaand they did, he ended it.

You'll spend more on parts than what you'd be able to get out of it, the labor would pretty much be free, but if you love working on cars it could be a fun project.  It looks alot cleaner than mine is, but then again mine is all original metal (and mine is an XS :))  just the drivetrain would likely drive the budget close to resale, if you got a crate motor.  I spent 800 on my car 30 years ago for the whole car,  in the last 5 i've spent over 3k just for various small parts, (not counting the paint job work) and I have LOTS of spare parts laying around.  I balk often when facing a part that costs 700 bucks...spending 100 to 200 on a part doesn't bother me much, but spending close to the original purchase price does...just the vinyl top cost me close to 600, not counting the installation.

I'd recommend getting a more complete car, at least you'll be able to enjoy it more as you rebuild it.
