Superbird grille material?

I have a "somewhat" early production Superbird (RM23U0A158604) and it has the Daytona grille material (rectangular openings).  I purchased it in '82 and it appears to be original.  As we know, the material is a larger dimension than the Daytona's.  I saw RM23U0A158602 at the Mopar Nat's (1988) and I believe it also had the Daytona material?  The orange Superbird in the old Wynns Oil ad also has Daytona material.  Was this an early build nuance?
