Why is the turn signal indicator doing this?

I drove into work this morning (yes I know it's Sunday but you gotta do what you gotta do) and since it was nice and dark I noticed something strange going on with the right turn signal indicator.  Recently I replaced the turn signal switch and cam and since then the turn signals and brake lights work as they should.  Both indicators on the instrument panel work as do the hood turn signals.  While going straight the indicator shows a faint light behind it that kinda comes and goes, no pattern to it at all.  It looks like the bezel is pulled away a bit and some of the backlighting shows through, yet when I push on the bezel it's nice and tight.  I also have new foam seal rings between the two.

Does anyone have a clue what this could be?

Sounds like a bad ground

:yesnod: make sure the gauge cluster is grounded to the dash frame  , also !  the two ground wires on the headlamp harness are bolted to shiny metal on the core support  , &  the front Turn signal lamp housings are grounded , factory was is by the attaching/ mounting  screws !  only !!
good idea to run separate ground wires   :yesnod:

I noticed this morning that not only the right indicator on the dash lights up but the hood turn signal on the right does as well.

I just replaced the turn signal switch so I bet it has something to do with it.  It never did this with the old switch and I haven't touched anything else.  The cluster is grounded only by the original screws in the frame but seeing everything else works, it shouldn't be the cause I think.

I'll look at the switch connections under the steering column but if I don't find anything, where do I add the ground to?

Yea, I think mine does this too but only when the headlights are on??  Don't notice it during the day. I just figured that it's a dual filament bulb and a bad ground on the "park" setting.   :shruggy:

Interested in what you find that's for sure.  :yesnod:

You know I didn't think of that (shocker...).  Maybe it does only do this when the lights are on.  Maybe it does it all the time and I just can't tell if it's not dark out.  I'll do a little experiment in the garage tonight.  Thanks for the thought!   :2thumbs:

took these pictures last night , while doing a cam swap ,  see better with front off  :yesnod:

shows  where & how added dedicated ground wires ,  little over kill maybe  , but i'm nutts like that  :image_294343:,

guage cluster fame , drill a hole & bolt a ground  wire to it  :yesnod:

bottom picture  where arrows point to , there are already holes with a welded nut on the back from factory , so just clean to shiny metal & bolt the ground wire up , laqure or wax or greese ovver any exposed bare metal  :yesnod:

No not yet, I've been working 7 days a week lately so all I do is drive it.  I may tackle it this weekend so I'll keep you posted.

Hemidog

I had the same problem a few years back, It turned out that the front parking lights were inadequately grounded.

Dino

I'm sure it's a ground issue somewhere and since it started after installing the new switch it's probably the culprit.  Unfortunately I had no time again to look at it but as long as it doesn't catch on fire it's no rush.  Everything still works.  :2thumbs:

Dude, by the time it "catches on fire" it's too late.   :o  I hear you though.

Not to worry, nothing's catching fire.  If those two bulbs lit up enough to blind me than it would be parked with the battery disconnected but that's hardly the case.

I'm going to do that little mod tan top posted, that oughta do it!
