Q: What Color was Factory Primer?

Someone is asking me, and I'm stumped. And I searched several forums and can't locate any discussion.

In 1968, what was the color of the factory primer?

Always gray? or different colors depending on the final top coat color?

And for my curiosity, by 1970 would the primer color be different for the Hi Impact paints from the everyday colors?

Ghoste

I thought it was red oxide for factory primer and black for factory replacement panels?

Dino

Red oxide, I have a bit of paint missing on the front edge of the fender, I can take a pic tonight if you want.

Thanks Dino, but not necessary.

Were any B-Bodies primered in a gray color?

Was any other color than red used?

red oxide for me too, wish i hadn't stripped it all off and done it in gray before the repaint, but hindsight is always 20/20

so are the colors more accurate if you use red primer  i bought gray primer  to spray over epoxy  to sand and fill   can i finish with  red primer then paint or don't it matter

Fred

Original primer was red oxide.

But once you paint the car you're not going to know what colour the primer is. And no, the colours are not more accurate depending on which primer colour you use.
Whatever primer colour you use the outcome will be the same.
