Engine diagnostic/rebuild question

Since I discovered the vibration problem was due to the transmission being loose at the bellhousing I've been considering not doing a rebuild. It seemed to run good at an idle but when I revved it the vibration started. Unfortunately I didn't discover the loose tranny until after I had taken the engine out so checking the compression is a problem. How can I have the engine checked without going into it for $1,000? Do you think I can just take to one of these rebuild places and have them dyno it for me and run a leakdown and compression check?

bolt the tranny back on & do a compression test on it , you need the tranny to mount the starter & spin the ring gear on the converter

And get some new bell housing bolts, the ones that were in there running and loose are probably toast.
I know your just doing a test, but I would toss them anyway.

Can I pull all the plugs so it won't start and then touch 12v to the starter to turn it over with the compression tester in one hole? I haven't pulled the tranny off yet but I'll replace the bolts. What compression am I supposed to have or should they all just be about the same? And what about a leak down test? I guess I'd have to seal off the cooling system somehow.

copresion test should all be within 10  pecent. as for a number, id want at least 110 or but if i remember right its a 2 barrel 383 motor right?.   id guess 125-135 should be in decent shape.  the nice thing about a leak down test is, it tells you exactly whats wrong.
