How do you get the darn thing out?

Msnusl says to use a special tool, but there has got to be another way, I HOPE!!

Just pry it out after removing the yoke. You'll mangle it.

I'm assuming this is not on a 489 case.

As far as tools go, a cheap dent puller will substitute for the factory tool. Otherwise, split it with a chisel and get to work with vise grips or a channel lock. It takes a little effort, but it will come. When you do mangle it, be cautious not to scar the axle tube or you could have seepage.

drive it inwards a roll it over , if you use a chisel do not score the insid eof the tube or it will leak , at least use the chisel at the top so the leak is least likely

To elaborate on my previous reply, removing the pinion nut and yoke on a 489 disturbs the crush sleeve and resulting preload.

I spent half a day trying to get one of those dumb things out. I tried a dent puller with the correct attachment (not the factory tool but the same thing). Eventually I got ticked and just whacked it on one edge with a chisel and it popped right out! The second one took less than a minute. After fighting all that a friend of mine said "next time, just use an old broom handle and pop it out from the other side". :brickwall:

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Dent puller with a hook was what I used last time but I've also given them a nick with a chisel.  Luckily I didn't hit the tube.
