Your tow chain breaks....

So me and a friend of mine were moving my Charger out in the open to get to it easier.  Hooked a chain to the leaf spring in the rear and to his bobcat and proceded to move it out.  Got it almost into the spot we wanted when  SNAPP!!!!  The chain broke and left my charger, with no brakes, rolling backwards.  Rolled straight into a tree and bent the rear bumper, trunk lid, and trunk rail.  Only end of the car with no damage.  ...as the Charger saga continues.. just more things to work on.

So my question is... who else has had issues like this happen to you?  Anyone have other "unfortunate event" stories???

My uncle has a '67 Fastback Mustang GT survivor that he forgot to set the brake on and it rolled back into a tree...

Another uncle had a '55 pro-streeted Chevy with a fiberglass bumper that ran a lawn mower into and cracked said bumper in half.

If you have something nice, eventually something is going to happen.

Yeaht that stinks, but could have been worse.
I had mine outta garage running to adj the carb, and apparently did nto get it all the way in park.
I was messing with the carb and it started goign backwards on me. I have a big ditch about 30 feet right behind it.
I thought for a sec to just let it go not risk trying to save it, but my instinct took over, I ran opened the door jumped into the moving car, and was able to hit the brakes a few feet before.
After this episode, I BLOCK all my cars even when not running. You can never be too safe, Even if I am pushing a non moving car, I put block at each end fo the car just in case.
Cheap insurance!!! wood blocks!!

What kind of dinky chain were you using? I learned a long time ago to use a back up when moving anything with a tow strap or chain. Stinks it happened to you, but it looks like you needed a new trunk lid anyways. The bumper can be straightened when it gets re-chromed.

i havnt had it happen to me personally but a friend pulled into the top of his driveway with is truck, that happened to be a stick, and got distracted by his wife. while talking to her he got out of his truck and they walked out back. while chatting outback he heard someone pull into his driveway. as he turned around to see who it was he was shocked to see his truck rolling down the hill and smash right through his garage door.

Dino

Sorry about the damage.

On a different note: never connect chains, ropes or straps to suspension or drivetrain.  Next time hook the chain to the frame or you may end up adding a few items to your next order.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

That Sux......

I used to yank my Charger out of the carport using a chain, I would ALWAYS pull a few feet, stop, throw the wheel chocks, pull a few more feet, stop, throw.........

At least you had a tree to stop yours, had mine ever went, it woulda gone through the back of the carport and straight down a 45 degree slope into the woods

.....the floor jack handle falls back.   It makes an unmistakable thud.

Yeah, the one stripedelete mentioned is a bad one too.

Never hurts to set the parking brake so it drags when pulling a car. That way it keeps tension on the strap and the car doesn't just roll freely.

Although the best idea is to have someone else in the car.

Sorry to hear that. I guess you shouldve had backup plan. I once pulled dead car onto a trailer with come-a-long but it had brakes so one person could sit inside in case it went backwards.

Definitely some interesting stories.  Unexpected things are unpleasant sometimes, but no use in crying over spilt milk.  I think billssuperbird has the right idea!! haha   :yesnod:
