Hey guys,

I asked this over at cc.com too to get a good grasp of the question. I was wondering when compared to 2nd gen chargers and any year chally, how the 71-74 roadrunner compares in Value? I know that late(73,74) ebodies are the least desirable out of the three if you could say that, but Im just looking to see if you can grab a RR in similiar condition as the cars mention previously for less money? Thanks alot.

I would say the '71 Roadrunner's will be worth the most of the years mentioned. None of them are going to bring as much as a similar 2nd generation Charger unless the options are special(Six pack, 4 speed, Air Grabber, etc.)

IMO the '73 and '74 Roadrunner's are one of the forgotten Mopars...nothing really wrong with them but, they just don't get much press because of the "smog" label. You can really say that about most of the Mopars after '72.(actually after '71 if you really want to get technical but, the 1972's still had some of the cool options carryover)

I might be wrong but I believe the 70 is the gold standard in Road Runners when it comes to value.

I'd say the '73/74 are the least expensive out of the years you asked about. The grille & tail lights were not as smooth or clean looking as '71/72, & I think that's a big factor. I know I don't like them at all comparing those years. (The '70 was always my favorite.)

I think you're right, it seems to be the one year that had so many to choose from too. The base 383 car, the 6V, the Hemi, the ragtops, hardtops, coupes & Superbirds. The trap door air grabber was cool & it's my favorite year for it & had to have another one.  :icon_smile_big:

It was best left alone as a Fury & maybe having a big block would have given it some credibility. Calling it a Road Runner AND a Charger was a joke. If I recall, a car mag did a story in the late 70's on a Police Fury. Said it was the fastest street car at the time. I have that mag somewhere, but I just about give up trying to find this old crap in print & should just toss it.  ::)

I have seen RR clones for like 15k(but with allot of power under the hood) soo i know what you mean, but i have seen cheap ones on Ebay..

Let's say you have 5k burning a hole in your pocket. For 5k you could buy one of the following.
2nd  gen Chargers- a 318 HAPLAG father/son project.
Any year chally- you might find a decent 74, 318 driver that needs paint and engine work.
71-74 RR. You could get a real clean,73/74, 318 driver.   



72 Charger- Base Model
68 Charger-R/T Clone
69 Charger Daytona clone
79 Lil Red Express - future money pit
88 Ramcharger 4x4- current money pit
55 Dodge Royal 2 door - wife's money pit
2014 RAM 2500HD Diesel

I'd take the RR just because you don't see them everywhere like the other choices.Those other choices are like camaros ,everyone has one.

Not to try and hijack the thread, but how do Coronet ("69s mainly) prices fall in there?

I've wanted to make an A12 SuperBee clone for a long time (as the real ones are outta my reach), but don't really know what is considered the 'standard' price for a driver 318 "69 Coronet with good sheetmetal would be.

I think '73-'74 roadrunners are underrated.

But I dont want other people to think that, if they do it will drive the price up.

I just looked at a 72or 73 Road Runner this past weekend. It had a 383. I only looked at it quickly. It had some rust but I'm not sure the extent. It was sitting next to the 72 Charger I posted about. I don't know what the guy wants for it but I am sure it's for sale.

Completely depends on the options. After 1971 the GTX was an option on the road runner. So a 1973/1974 GTX U coded 440 car is not cheap. Also the 1972 Air Grabber cars are quite pricey along with the 400 4 speed versions. But the 1971 up body style will not compete with the 68-70 square B cars. That is with similar drivetrains. One of the ultra few 1972 440 6bbl cars with Air Grabber will certainly be worth more than a 383 68-70 car.

I'd maybe take a nice clean one for a daily driver, but I wouldn't spend any real money on one. Now a 78/79 Magnum is a different story, I'd love one of those. They're in my top 50 to 75 list somewhere. ;D
