I would like to change the transmission in my 1970 charger to a late model 5 speed or 6 speed transmission with an OD final drive.  I have not been successful navigating the forum for this.  I am looking for recommendations and advice?  The gears are 4.30:1.  I will not be racing the car.

Thank you,

James

Science is just observation and hypothesis.  Policy stands in the way.........

Or maybe it protects us.

I suppose it depends on the specific case.....

This is my personal opinion.  I have a 3.73 gear in the back and am running a TKO 600 Keisler.  Based on my setup I couldn't see having a 6 speed.  If you have a 4.10, then probably.

The new Keisler does not need any modification to the tunnel.

Good luck.

It depends if you want a bolt in unit or if you are going to modify the floor ,cross member & mounts .
Tony Edler at Classic can set u up with Tremec TKO systems for a bolt in & is better to deal with than Keisler . next to that the T56 Viper trans is a great swap , but it is far from a bolt in

Thank you.  This helps.

Out of curiosity,  for a manual transmission is there an ideal drive ratio for first gear?

For instance, with a 4.30 and 2.89 with the TKO600 I get a ratio of 12.5.

Do you have any other info for "Tony Edler at Classic "?  Does Tony have a website?  What is his contact info?  What comes in his kit?

Thanks!

I just went through this exact exercise and decided on the Keisler TKO 600, rated at 600 HP with matching hydraulic clutch.  Here is a good youtube video review with pros and cons - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zIwltdD_ZY.  I have heard that there is a learning curve on the 2nd to 3rd shift, as the review illustrates.  I have a good friend with a monster engine who uses this tranny, and swears you cannot shift 2nd to 3rd at the top of the power band.  I talked extensively with Keisler, and upgraded my synchros for like $100 (discounted) and they said this would fix the shift issue, although I do not plan on shifting at 9 grand.  Yet to be installed, but perhaps this may give you some insight.  Also, there are number speed analyzers out there so you can play with your gear ratios.  Good luck!
