Tic-Toc-Tach suckyness

Has anyone been successful with making the T-T-T into an accurate and reliable tach?  I know first hand and have read countless stories of how they're inaccurate, they bounce around etc etc etc.  But is it possible to keep the T-T-T appearance and replace the guts with something to turn it into an accurate tach?  I know most people put an aftermarket tach under the dash frame or on the steering column but I'd like to avoid that if possible.

Any creative solutions out there to make the T-T-T the way it should be?

I read somewhere that the older style factory tachs do not "play well" with pointless ignition. That was promptly dismissed as not so the last time I repeated it so I'm not now.  :lol:

I have a repro T.T.T. in my '69 (Charger Specialties version). Works pretty good as a tach, & compatible with electronic ignitions.

The downsides: the font/number spacing is slightly different than O.E., and the clock has crappy plastic gears that strip out. Hence, my clock stopped working within the first year, hey just like an original one!  :smilielol:
I'll probably pull it over the winter to have the clock portion gutted & rebuilt.

My dad rebuild my tach as the circuit board was fried (he is a retired electronics teacher). He mentioned that these tach can't be very accurate by design - the main problem is the mechanism that drives the needle. A spring holds the needle down and a magnetic spool moves it up - problem is that the mechanism is really slow to respond to rpm changes. Also the needle pivot can wear out or get dirty so that the needle doesn't want to move as easily as it should.

Does anyone know if the tach internals can be re-gutted with a better tach so from the outside you wouldn't know the difference?
