Hey guys, just wondering about 727 trannys', i have a 69 charger with a 440 and 727 tranny from a 74 new yorker, my tranny is perfect, but i know when i blow it up i will not find one cheap, i have a lead on 2 727's a guy has for $150 CDN each, one is out of a challenger, one from a cuda, both are 70's and were 340 motors. He said they both worked fine when pulled about 8yrs ago, now here's my question, will they fit? bolt patterens? tourque converter/flex plate all the same? is the price good? i know they probally need rebuilt from sitting for so long but they're cheap from what i've seen. anything else i should look for when buying one of these?

thanks  ??? :icon_smile_big:

No, the small block/big block transmissions won't interchange. Internal parts will (BB 727 - SB 727) but to buy and store one for possible internal part usage is a waste of time and money in my opinion.

If you can find a BB 727, it would probably be worthwhile to buy (cheap) if you have the room to store it, as they are getting harder and harder to find.

IIRC, the dust cover bolt patterns are one way of telling.

The big block has 4 bolt holes for the dust cover all the same size.

The small block will have 4 bolt holes, with the outer 2 larger than the innermost 2 bolt holes.

Something like that..........will look for a side by side pic.

*Speed costs money son, how fast do you want to go, and for how long?"
*"Build the biggest engine you can afford the first time."
*"We normally wouldn't use a 383 for this build, parts and labor for a 440 cost the same."

Chryco Psycho

the small block case has a bolt hole @ 12:00 position where ti bolts to the engine the big block doesn`t

I agree the dust cover bolt pattern is the easiest way to tell the BB form the SB. In the pic, BB is on the right>
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.
