Faulty headlight switch?

Take into mind that I am in the process of rewiring my car.  My question is the headlight switch.  There are 5 terminals on this thing and I think I've figured out where they go.  I've got a schematic so I know what the stamped letters mean.  When I switch them to the on position (all the way up), right when I reach the final position all of my lights (dash, tail, side) come on and then go off.  Its as if there are 4 settings instead of the original 3.  Would this be a faulty switch or do I have some wires crossed?

You can remove and take apart that switch if your careful. Part of the slider inside could be gunked up.  :scratchchin:

The correct wiring on a '68 would see the front park lights go out when the headlight switch is thrown from the centre position (park lights only) to it's full on position.  The tail lights should stay on though...

That changed for '69 onwards... park lights in front and tail lights in back stay on in the full on position.

The wiring schematics bare that out...     :yesnod:

I do like the idea of my parking lights staying on with my headlights. Would I just wire them together on the same terminal and get a ballast for overheating issues?

If you want your front park lights to stay on when the headlight switch is turned to it's full on position, I believe all you need to do is splice the yellow tracer wire into the double black wire connector going to the headlight switch.  From the wiring diagram I have for a '68, the double black wires look like they feed all four side markers (the front side markers via a dark green wire coming off of the rheostat switch beside the headlight switch) and tail lights and the yellow tracer wire feeds the front park lights.

If you add the yellow tracer to the connector having the double black wires on the headlight switch, it should give you park lights on the front in both the mid and full-on headlight switch positions...    :yesnod:

I'd encourage you to stay with stock though... it makes your '68 a '68!  Unique from all the other years!    :2thumbs:

Well I've converted the parking light holes into brake ducts. I'm going to have to find some suitable parking/turn signals for the empty spots that are on each side of the license plate.  Thanks for the wiring help though! :2thumbs:
