Did you notice the snorkel? That's the air intake and would keep the motor running even when submerged in water. That's my theory.

Those Landcruisers are tough vehicles! When you're in OZ you'll see markers on low lying sections of the road telling you the water depth if the road becomes flooded. Deepest ford I went through with my Landcruiser was 3 feet of water.

Yeah I've seen plenty of trucks with snorkels, but I would have imagined that these trucks are designed to ford depths not much taller than their tires.  What about the electrical systems?  No snorkel is going to save those items...

No worries about the electrical system - it still works when the whole engine bay is submerged. Don't know how it works but as I said before 3 feet of water in a 30 yard ford didn't harm my Landcruiser.

I have seen some guys actually run a plastic box around the distributor so the distributor is basically water proof but most imports have ran distributorless ignitions since the mid to late 90's now so with that system you really only have to worry about air intake. And most pack the electrical connectors with grease.

Looks like fun.  I would bet if they would have opened a door and let water in earlier it may not have floated off the road. When I was young we went fishing where the water came up and we had to cross deep water to get back out. It was deep enough the fan of the /6 pick up started choping water so my uncle removed the fan belt long enough to get out then put it back on after crossing.

And that's as it should be right................otherwise the snorkel would be superfluous. 
Although I do know a few people that have bought it purely as an accessory...........go figure!

Before my time  .............Seriously, only vaguely.
I do remember the Leyland's though and good old Malcolm Douglas (who managed to do himself in, in his own backyard so to speak)

Just watched it again , ahh , what a hard nut , see the size of that croc 
 3 meters around the girth! Hard to fathom just by looking at it. Only 100 years old............had his life cut short at a young age!

Come on Myk, it's called modern technology! It's constantly being improved. If these 4WD's are made for going cross country and fording rivers etc. then they're obviously built to suit that purpose.  Are you with me ?
