Alternator burned up.  Used up a brand new fire extinguisher trying to put it out.  Ended up having to call the fire department.  Ironically, we had just replaced the old fire extinguisher a couple days ago.

Glad you were not injured!  If you you used a Dry Chem extinguisher and it gets repaired get all the electronics replaced. That stuff eats them up.

Shit, my boss had the damn thing fixed and running by lunch.  Only the alternator, a couple hoses, and the wiring needed replaced.  I swear, this damn truck is like Christine.  It will not die.  Made for an exciting morning.  Was kinda hoping the fire would have been the last straw, though, so I could convince my boss to replace it with a Dodge. :D

The alternator in my 76 Powerwagon caught fire in 1989. I would have never guessed that an alternator could do that. 23 years later and this is the first time I've ever heard of another. Fun stuff!

As I said in the first post, the alternator burned up.  Shorted out, caught on fire.

Having a "WORK" truck burn up is usually a good thing as long as you get out of it in time. I'm sorry to hear they fixed it so fast.
My 1969 Charger. RIP......Rest in pieces.

Most times with Ford Alternators, it's the huge wiring harness at the back Nobody replaces when replacing the alt. This gets a bad connection and then begins your fire. I've seen many Ford's burnt up at this harness. I've also seen this harness burnt all black, but hadn't caught fire yet.
