Hot Brakes or Not?

Doing a brake job on the 500 with 11" drums up front. The mounting springs for the shoes were all busted into little pieces and tar-like goo covers the hubs.By pal says its the result of super hot brakes.

I have never seen this before.

I'm gonna turn the drums - should I bother or are they likely warped?

the goo could just be grease that accumulated and the springs could have just broken with age.  Hard to say.

If there is sufficient material left in the drums, by all means turn them.  (assuming there is a shop in your area where they still know how to do this  )

  i have  never heard of springs breaking with heat  ,

just out of curiosity , what the bearings like ?  did they have greese still ,  adjusted too tight

There is still plenty of grease and it looked reasonably normal when I cleaned out the hubs. The bearings and races also look good, and the wheel spun fine on the spindle, so it did not seem too tight.

I have done a lot of brake jobs and I have never seen or even heared of one of these springs breaking before. I can't even imagine a situation where the one spring would be broken into 4 pieces! My buddy thinks it's caused by multiple hard stops from high speed. For those old enough to remember, brake fade from overheating did happen on drum brake cars - I just didnt think it would get so hot as to destroy the temper on spring metal.

As far as turning the drums, luckily there is run down old gas station a few miles away where they will turn anything you bring in for $10. Free entrprise and service is not dead yet, I just need to brush up on my Spanish.
