Some of you might remember my recent purchase of some welded Ultraflo mufflers..

http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,89364.0.html

Wanted to change the exhaust note a bit over the Hemi mufflers I am running.  While they do sound great, I wanted a deeper, non-exhaust leak sound with a little bit more volume.
I decided on these Ultraflo's upon the recommendation of others.  They are a straight through design with some glasspacking...not a chambered muffler like the Flowbastards I had back in the day.  Those produced a horrible drone that I couldnt stand.  Others running these stated they have no drone so I bit the bullet & ordered up a pair.

Got them installed at a friends shop & was blown away by the sound at idle & on the throttle!     However I had a MASSIVE DRONE back!  :slap: Right around 1800-2200 RPM...cruise rpm :rotz:

What to do?  I knew I wouldnt last a week with the drone these things had as I like to actually drive my car to shows etc ;)  Do I give in & swap back my Hemi mufflers or do I further customize?  Hey thats what Hot Rodding is all about right?  Customize it will be!

So I ordered up as set of 18" long 4" diameter Magnaflow (part # 10426 2.5" in/out) mufflers to use as resonators & mount them in the stock "Hemicar" location.  Cut my tailpipes & used SS band clamps to secure them to the pipes & tips.  Overall I am happy with how they fit & look.   Cant really tell they are there unless you look for them.

They cured 100% of the drone I was getting with the Ultraflo's but at a price.  They also cut down on the overall "loudness" of the mufflers.  At idle you can still hear the cam in the engine but not as pronounced as without the resonators.
On the throttle though they really open up!  Nice & deep tone that you can hear "outside" the car if you know what I mean.  The exhaust note is now exiting at the rear of the car instead of all around the car....not as obnoxious as with just the Ultra's.
Out for a little cruise today & I was able to actually have a speaker phone conversation on my cell at cruise rpm...getting on the car still makes those on the street turn around & see what the orange blur was that went by :drive:

Here are some YouTube vids from my iPhone for a little comparison...hard to tell how they actually sound when you are actually there but you get the idea.

I like the last one with the ultra flo's and resonators.
Too me that's more of a muscle sound.
The hemi mufflers sounded tinny, ultra flo's themselves too raspy for me.
Sort of like the three bears the last one is just right.  :smilielol:

Looks Hemierer...  sounds a bit mellower.   But if you can hold a conversation or hear the radio or whatnot then  :2thumbs:

I got a drone with mine as well....I have heard that if you put a connecting cross pipe just after the trans..it will help.

I ain't done it yet on mine...but I plan on it someday

440 & Hemi cars came originally with an H-pipe (which my car has) still had the drone though.

That was basically what I was looking to do after the muffler swap...wasnt expecting to have to go to those lengths to get a sound I wanted but oh well ;)

Very VERY nice, Chris!!  :2thumbs:

You have gotten the cogs moving inside my brain. I wonder what they would do for the Flowdeafeners drone on my '68??  :scratchchin:

given me something to think about now  :scratchchin:

Steve looks like 2.5" is the largest diameter they offer in the 4" diameter muffler....the 6" diameter comes in 3" pipe...too large to fit in the tailpipe area.

I Like #3. Its a very controlled "tuned for the car" sound.  :yesnod:

,yes that would too big !  course !!
on a 3" tail pipe! forgot all about that how big the muffler diameter would have to be !  D'oH :slap:

Chris.....still happy with the way the resonators are working?

I've got "the drone" with my Dynomax Turbos, and am considering the resonators as you installed them.     :scratchchin:

Hemi muffs sounds like my Charger did in the 1980, think they were Flowmasters.  :scratchchin:

No problems with them but actually this season I took them off and put the tail pipes back on.  Easy 10 min swap using the SS band clamps.  I think the mufflers kind of mellowed out as well because the drone doesnt seem as annoying as before :shruggy:
I actually drove 3 hrs down to Carlsile, PA with no ear bleeding at all ;)

Personally I like the sound of the straight Hemi mufflers. That is what I used on all my Mopars.

Cooter

Drone doesn't bother me as much as others. Even on long trips. I guess I look at it as when that Soccer mom pulls along side and her snot nosed little teenager looks out the window, she turns to him/her and says "Look honey, that's the car your father wants, but he got you instead", sound is what I look to make driving my junk.

However, after 20 years of Flowmasters, I have begun to look to make 'Different' sounds with the Challenger. I hope to make it one of those 'Wonder what mufflers he used. Sounds awesome!' sounds with that car at shows.

I'm still running the Magnaflow resonators behind Flowmasters on my '68 per Chris' recommendation. LOVE it.  :yesnod:
Still has that throaty Flowmaster sound, without your head exploding from the drone.

I also have Dynomax Ultra-Flow's on my '69, no resonators and no drone either. I prefer them over the Flowmasters.
