My 68 has hood insulation but I have not found it called out on my fender tag. Is it supposed to have been?
What is the purpose of the hood insulation? Are there certain options on the car that would have dictated hood insulation included?

Thanks,

Lawrence

Could be a dealer add-on.

Or an owner add-on sometime in the last 40 years.

I've heard two reasons for it - sound deadening and protecting the outside paint from engine heat.

Was that on the fender tag or on the build sheet?  I seem to remember that cars that got full body undercoating also came with the hood insulation too.

X2.......especially A/C cars. No A/C on my 69 but it does have OEM hood insulation.  :shruggy:

Broadcast Sheet only, sales code J55 if anyone cares - and you're correct, hood insulation was "packaged" with undercoating under that same sales code.

I know it rubs on the chrome air cleaner of my R/T  :flame: :brickwall:    If it wasn't an original undercoated car, I'd yank that hood pad off for sure.

which is why you need one for when you get to the show and one for driving!

I know on third gen's they were part of a package which would be listed on the build sheet.
But not usually listed seperately. If you wanted pad, you ordered the package.

So if you don't use the hood insulation, will it damage the hood paint over time?  I'm asking about a car equipped with a/c but would also like to know about non-a/c cars (2nd gen chgr).

:yesnod:   My 69 RT with AC has the J55 code and the under hood insulation. I have been told that the OEM insulation clips are made of unobtainium.

Great question. I've never seen a report or study about it. Maybe a long time body and paint guy can share observations.

I'll offer personal experience. My Hemi Road Runner has no insulation. The motor has seen some hot times.  :D

Over 4000 miles in 4 years and I can't see any paint issues on the hood. Even on the underside. In fact I am sure that the hood gets substantually hotter sitting in the California sun than it does from the Hemi running hot. I think the sun does the damage, not motor heat.

Just some thoughts.  :Twocents:

Great replys guys thanks.

My car has A/C and factory undercoating so I now I know why it is there. The insulation rubs the top of the air cleaner which is a bummer but don't think it would be that much of an issue if I did not have the Eddy Performer RPM on there.

My car had the underhood insulation and undercoating.  The car was 318 but going the BB/manual route.  No undercoating.  I bought new underhood insulation but was thinking that the engine compartment would look a lot better without any insulation.  So I was thinking about not installing it.  Neither my Ram truck or my newer Challenger have insulation under the hood.  So I'm thinking that it isn't really necessary.  In fact, I'm thinking that it's primary purpose back in the day was sound insulation.

Sixt8Chrgr

Yep it was for sound deadening.

Hmmm. Think I'll remove mine tomorrow before a cruise we're going on.
Might sound better without it....
Gotta love a '69
