Why do I have to shoot carb cleaner to start

I have a 440 with stock carter quad carb and if I let the car sit for over a day I always have to shoot
some carb cleaner directly into carb to get a prime where it will then start.  Is my carb just junk
or does anyone have some tips I can do.  Thanks

AGAIN...Search this as there are numerous threads/posts about todays fuels and carb'd engines...If it sits over a day, most likely it will NOT start without RE-priming the carb. Fuel evaporates out of carb. Short of Electric fuel pumps and EFI, nothing can or will be done to curb this...

An electric fuel in line priming pump will solve your problem. My car starts first time every time.   :2thumbs:

thanks, gonna check into putting one in.  Sorry for not searching.  Gonna search freds posts to find out what type
he put in and how he put it in now.

Do you give it 2 or 3 good pumps before trying to start it up?

Wow. Great idea!  Info, pics?  I'll go that route.
This car was sold many years ago to somebody in Wisconsin. I now am retired and living in Florida.

Very common problem. I have an original carb and if it sits more than a day, pump crank pump crank pump, vrooooom.

We have that problem with our chally.  My charger also does it but not anywhere close to as bad as what the challenger does.  My charger if I crank it over for a little while, then pump it twice, crank it over usually fires right up even after sitting for a month or so.  The challenger you need to repeat the process a lot or give it a quick shot of starting fluid after we crank the engine over to at least get oil pumped up through the system.

I agree that todays fuel is absolutely horrible with evaporating so fast.  Ethanol tends to make the cars also run hotter which our cars were not designed for so that just adds more complications. :rotz:

I have a 440 with a 850 double pumper. 2 good pumps and it fires right up. I don't think I've ever had to remove the air cleaner to start it.

I think a lot of it has to do with the design of the Carter carbs.  The bowl vent is left totally open unless you floor it which closes the plunger.  When we had a holley on the chally when we first got it, we had no issues.  It started once we put the factory carb back on there.

My stock six pack 440 just needs some extra cranking to get going if it sits too long.

Sometimes they supercede their stock. I bought mine some years ago.I've had a look on their website and part #40106 could be what your looking for.  But if you send them an email or just phone them, I'm sure they'll be able to set you straight.
