How close should the muffler be to body?

I'm working on the exhaust of my 68 Charger and I got a system from Summit. There is an indentation on the body for the muffler to sit up in-but how close should it be to the body? I don't want it to bang when I drive it.

Never really noticed an "indentation" on the body for the muffler to sit up in.  I know original mufflers were "notched" on opposing corners for more clearance between the unibody and the muffler and the drive shaft and the muffler.
