Scary moment!

Troy

A couple years ago I got tired of having my junk scattered all over the country so I found a garage big enough to store it all in. Tonight on my way over to install my snazzy new (ok rebuilt) shifter in the Challenger I could see smoke in the air and hanging over the road. As I got closer there was a plastic smell and I could see at least four fire trucks and several police cars in the road on my block. Talk about a lump in your throat! I couldn't get down the road but I was able to park at a store down the street and walk part of the way down the alley. I could see lights in my windows but soon realized it was the light from the fire trucks on the other side shining through. There were still some big flames but I was able to find out that the garage two houses down was a total loss - and it appeared that the one next door was a casualty as well. The police said they'd have the road shut down for at least 6-7 more hours and I couldn't get in until after they were done so I guess I'll get a closer look in the morning. So far it sounds like my stuff is safe though.

I now live in an apartment building while working here in town. I have contect insurance on everything I own because of theft or fire. Not only is this building filled with mostly senior citizens and there have been a few close calls with fire, but this town has a worse crime rate per capita than Vancouver.

Then on top of that I've made sure to fully insure the Dart.

Granted there are a few family heirlooms like an original 1851 Colt Navy revolver from a family member who was in the civil war that could never be replaced.

Man, That would definitely be scarey. You have a lot of stuff in that garage! I hope you have it all insured to the hilt just in-case it were to happen.

Well I was definitely reviewing the insurance coverage today!

The garage two doors down is a total loss. Amazingly, the one next door (literally less than 4' away) only has minor damage. The one that caught on fire had block wall which shielded it for the most part. Also, the fire department figured the first one was a lost cause so they concentrated on protecting the second. There were supposedly a couple of cars in the one that burnt but I couldn't see any evidence of them. I heard that there must have been gas cans and propane tanks in there as there were about 15 separate explosions. I also heard the flames could be seen from over a mile away (I saw the smoke - though I didn't know what it was from - when I was about 20 miles away). Apparently the fire department said they had put over 50,000 gallons on it by 9 PM (fire started around 6 PM). The people in nearby houses and the dogs next door were evacuated early on. No injuries that I know of.

Here are some pics. You can see what's left of a motor home on the far left - and the neighbor's Ram.
