AMD metal ready to paint?

I wish I had discovered this forum several months ago. I am not new to Mopars only to finally getting around to working on my 68 Charger. It has much more rest than the insurance adjuster from whom I purchased it claimed. I had to figure out how to take the front fenders off and this forum would have saved me some headaches. Anyway, I am waiting on an acquaintance to give me his opinion on whether or not the front fenders can be saved. They are not dented, but they are rusty and a fair amount of bondo. AMD sells new ones for $750 each. They come painted a satin black. Can they be primered and painted the way they are or does the shiny black surface have to be scuffed up and or sanded off? Any help will be appreicated as I have to go this alone. I am going to use a rope and pully system (I think) to take the hood off by myself.

Some people remove the coating (it's not paint technically) completely and others just scuff it. You have to do something as you can't just spray right over it (too smooth for a good surface for the paint to stick to). It is ok to paint with proper preparation though.

I used a rope a few times to remove hoods.. ;)

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Troy, thanks that was what I was thinking. When I first began this project, I had no idea there was a cowl nut and bolt holding the fender in place, I had to use a rope to pull the fender up and a block of wood to keep it slamming shut on my arm when I achieved success, or that the innder fender shield had a nut I couldn't see as well. The right fender was worse and the shield tore off. The shield on the other side was in much better shape and wouldn't budge. I had to cut it off with a grinder (the bumper bracked nuts destroyed my "heavy duty" nut breaker). This will help as I may have to order a new fender. Thanks.

For a driver quality you can leave the E-coat on,just roughen it up with 320 and red scuff pad.For high quality restoration I'd remove it all completely and epoxy before any paint to make sure it's flawless. BTW, if you need any AMD stuff, shoot me email ,I'll get you a much better price.
