Can the fuel canister under the rear fender of my 71 charger be bypassed,a nd if so how?.....Thanks.

NHCharger

Yes. When I bought my 71 in Oct. 95 it was bypassed. Three of the lines coming out of the side of the tank were plugged off (poorly done also), and one line went straight to the fuel pump. Ran it like that until I pulled it off the road to restore it six years ago.

A properly functioning vapor recovery system will keep your garage smelling better.

That is a liquid/vapor separator. It has a series of tubes inside. When the vapors inside the tank expand, they go into that separator where they either condense and drain back to the tank, or get sucked forward into the PCV system.

That being said, they tend to rust out and leak. You may have to plug it.

If you plug it off, make sure you use a vented gas cap otherwise you'll vapor lock. The separator also serves to allow air into the tank as the fuel level drops.
