Hoping there might be a Victorian Charger owner out there with experience in VASS inspections/certificates.

I got my 73 Charger that I want to register. I went up to Vicroads and they told me that all I needed was a current roadworthy, the import approval, proof of ownership and my ID (and money). So I got my roadworthy today  :icon_smile_big: (had to fix a few things but got them all sorted over the last week) and went up to Vicroads today to book it in....first available appointment is next Tuesday.

They print me out a appointment card that has info on it that I have to bring. All the above stuff plus VAS and VIV certificates??? I ask again and they tell me that I don't need these. I get home and check out their website and it looks like to me I need a VAS but not a VIV.

Can anyone clear this up for me? Do I need a VASS

I am still going to roll up to the Tuesday booking and see if it will get through without a VASS but I suspect it I might have trouble?

Fred

Okay Dan, as I remember it I didn't need anything except a road worthy for my 68 Charger but for the 70 Cuda I needed it all. VASS (vehicle assesment signatory scheme) certificate, Vehicle import approval cert, and even a Engineers certificate............the engineer went over the car with a fine tooth comb. I had to modify the indicator lights, they had to be amber and put seatbelts in the back. And when it was all done he came back to inspect it before he handed over the certificate. He was pretty stringent. But the thing is, without all this documentation you can be sure you'll be left high and dry when it comes to insurance companies paying up if you're involved in an accident.
Also had to have a noise polution cert saying it was within the limit allowed.

These things a needed for cars built 1969 and later.

Tomorrow is promised to no one.......drive your Charger today.

I thought you didn't need to change the indicators to amber anymore? Possibly a 69 cut off or certain cars ?

Fred

From 69 on you do................at least that's what the engineer told me. He wasn't going to give me that certificate unless I put amber indicator lenses on my 70 Cuda.
This was about 6 years ago. I'm talking in Victoria. Don't know if things have changed in the meantime.

You might want to read over this. In nsw we only have to get a blue slip so i dont know vic but i looked up this for you.
VASS signatory must:

    personally inspect your vehicle
ensure all work, including any modification, is correctly carried out
certify that the vehicle complies with the applicable standards.

Years ago when they were strict my car had to have amber on the rear the easy way out was to put in orange globes in the reverse lights and run a couple of diodes in the line and hookem up as your blinkers no everyone runs the factory reds.

I think I just had a prick of an engineer!

My 69 came from NSW fully registered and only had reds....

NSW seems pretty lenient on modifications etc, and I was under the impression Vic was as well. Although I hear Vic is starting to get a bit more strict.

SA on the other hand is a downright joke.

Thanks for the advice and thoughts guys.
As I already have a registration appointment for Tuesday and they told me I didn't need a VAS I am going to turn up and see how it goes. I won't even mention VAS certificate to the officer. If it gets through well and good. If not and I expect not after looking at there web site and from the info from you guys I will chase up a VAS certifier in my area.

Point taken on the insurance deal Fred. If I do get through without a VASS I will Chat to Shannons about their requirements for an imported car and see what they say.

Cheers

Dan
