Opinion please: Factory tic toch tach or repro standard tach?

The tic toc tach on my car doesn't work right (clock doesn't work at all, tach seems to work, but I need the MSD style adaptor, so it's currently disconnected).  Charger Specialties sells that really nice repro tach without a clock for 200.  I figure if I sold my factory tach on Ebay I could get close to the 200 required to buy a brand new tach and be done with it.  I know it's not "correct" but really nothing on my car is, so I don't mind.  It'd just be nice to have a functional tach.  I'm not really in a position to simply store my factory tach and buy the new one anyway.

Ideas?  Feedback on the CS tach? ???

I like this one here:  http://rbyj.com/
I'm thinking about it and just putting the clock in front of it somehow...

It IS nicer, but it's also $275 vs. $200.  For $275 I might as well get mine fixed.

The old Tic Toc is one of the most recognizable features in a hi po Dodge.  ;D Ya gotta keep it. A few companies rebuild them as solid state items - well there were a few about 8 years ago or so.

Yes, I prefer the factory option too. I sent mine in to Performance Car Graphics. The tach rebuild was $130, converting the clock to quartz was $70, the clock set stem was replaced for $13, shipping & insurance $14 for a total of $227. The clock keeps perfect time and the tach works as it should.

I wholeheartedly endorse the RBYJ unit.   If only because the CS unit wasn't available last year.  Notice you can actually see the tach as opposed to looking at a clock.    It's a matter of personal opinion but I'm sure Khyron won't disagree with me.

I say have yours repaired & converted too. If you do go aftermarket, try to refrain from making a big hole in the dash. I looked at a '70 GTX once for sale that had 17,000 original miles. It also had an ugly "L" shaped bracket screwed right into the mint dash pad with 3 screws.  ::)

Look at this convenient & easy to access, tach wire hole in a next to impossible to fix molded dash:

I wouldn't use an aftermarket tach, just a "similar reproduction" if I didn't use the original.   I could always bolt a 5" monster tach to the hood!  Ok, not really.

Another option you have is to rebuild your own tach by replacing the factory circuit board with a new one from Real Time Engineering. I just did mine and it was very easy. It's supposed to work with any ignition system. I also put in a quartz clock conversion kit while I was at it. Both the clock kit and the tach board were $75 each.  http://rt-eng.com/mediawiki/index.php/Main_Page Here's an article from Mopar Action that shows you how it's done. http://rt-eng.com/mediawiki/images/8/8e/RealTimeEngTach_MoparActionApril20005.pdf

Now THAT idea I like.  I already have the decal kit, so $150 to complete it doesn't seem bad. And if it works with my Jacobs system, all the better.

As far as the clock goes, just spray it with WD-40.  Always worked for me.

My friend just put the Julious tach in his Charger, its very acurate, and a lot easier to read. I wouldn't get rid of the tic tock tach ,either though! That conversion kit works well too,my other friend just did three of them!

I'm glad I read this thread. I think I am going to order up the kits and fix my tic-tock tach this winter. It's sitting on a shelf in my living room right now. This means I will have to order up new faces for them while I am at it. Thanks Dennis K. :icon_smile_big:

anyone else notice that the tach pictured on the paddocks website as being "correct" is not even close to a real one?
