Witness captures Woodlands Corvette street race, wreck on video

jridgway@hcnonline.com | Posted: Monday, November 28, 2011 2:00 pm

A drag race between two Corvettes in a residential area of The Woodlands ended in a collision Thanksgiving morning and a witness to the race and wreck caught it all on video.

"They were driving like idiots a mile before and then pulled up to a red light, revving their engines at each other," said Gerod Rush, 29, a resident of The Woodlands. "I had a feeling that I knew what was going to happen next."

Rush said he pulled out his cell phone and started recording.

Dispatch with the Department of Public Safety said Troopers worked an accident scene around 10 a.m. Thursday on Woodlands Parkway, near the intersection of F.M. 2978. Their description matched the footage caught in Rush's video.

DPS dispatch said the names of the drivers involved could not be released at press time, but did indicate that no fatalities resulted from the wreck.

Rush said he has not been contacted by law enforcement about the video but will gladly share it with investigators at their request. DPS Dispatch said investigators are aware of a video from a wrecker. However, it is unclear at press time whether the video DPS referenced is the video Rush posted on his YouTube channel: 'thegrowingrushfamily.'

In the first 40 seconds of the footage, two grey Corvettes are stopped at a red-light at the intersection of Woodlands Parkway and West Branch Crossing Drive. An adult jogger and a child bicyclist cross the road together, followed by an adult bicyclist passing on the right.

The lights turned green and both cars hit the gas. Rush estimated the vehicles may have been traveling close to 60 mph when the Corvette on the right lost traction, went into a swerve, lost control and collided into the Corvette on the right, he said.

The impact sent the left-side Corvette off the road into a wooded area of the median. Rush stopped recording shortly after the wreck occurred.

"I noticed before, when they were going at it just earlier, that the right-side car's back tire was losing traction," Rush said. "So when he hard-accelerated at the light, he lost traction and then lost control."

As a longtime car enthusiast and longtime resident of The Woodlands, Rush said he understands the thrill of a good race; however, his advice to these drivers moving forward—"Keep it on the tracks, not the streets."

"My perspective on speeding has totally changed over the years. I have a kid now and when I see something like this I think, who knows what could have happened. But these were older guys behind the wheel," Rush said. "They should know better."

Rush said he hopes his video is seen by both drivers and further hopes they will seriously reconsider their aggressive driving behavior after watching it.

It was hard to tell (I had to watch the vid on my phone) but was there a curve? Maybe the goober shifted hard as he was aproaching this curve and the rear came around?  :shruggy:

It amazes me dailey of the ppl that think cuz they have the money to buy (relatively) fast cars that they are good drivers. It's also why GM, Dodge, Ford have to dummy the cars down by putting traction control, launch control and idiot lights all over their cars.  :Twocents:
