Are you talking about putting a stock floor shifter in or aftermarket? I put in a Hurst shifter in my 73. I did not weld anything, but I did make a bracket for the shifter to sit on the hump because of the offset in my console. I just used sheet metal screws to secure it and it works great.

This is for a 71, but it should be the same (I think). I'm planning the same thing. I've collected all of the parts and now just have to get around to doing it.
