Hi guys
I'm trying to register my -68 Charger here in Sweden and I dont have a title, how do you know if the car has ever been titled or registred.
The car is from Alabama and they didnt title cars pre 74 or 75 and their record only stretches 10years back. On the bill of sale it says 2001 so therefor there is no record at all on my car......
Is there some way i can get some info on my car?

I take it that Sweden is requiring that you have a title in order to register it? Maybe on of the other folks from Europe will chime in with some ideas on how to either get one or get them to register it without one.

I just picked up my 69 and it simply has a bill of sale as both the state where I bought it and where I live will not title anything over 15 yrs. So if it ever had one it got lost somewhere during its life and will not get another.

Not sure what an insurance paper is, you mean like a copy of an insurance policy on the car or some sort of proof of insurance from the seller? :scratchchin:  A tax receipt isn't specific enough - Are they looking for a tax receipt from the sale of the car or a receipt from the state that says we (the previous owner) paid our yearly property tax on the car? Which not all states have.

It might help more if you describe what the paper work that you need is documenting.

Might consider one of the title services with the bill of sale and what service they can provide. Alternatively might consider selling it (on paper) to a "good" friend who lives in a title state, depending on state still may need to use one of those title service companies using a bill of sale to in the process to get a state issued title.  As I recall there is several in the Alabama/Mississippi area and a couple other states.   :Twocents:Good luck

Need a paper with my VIN that show that the car has been used in traffic.

Sounds like you need a copy of the previous owners registration which the states use to tie an owner to a license plate and thus allow them to drive it on the road. If you just got the car check the glove box for a copy of it. Most of us leave the registration paperwork in the glove box normally and it was still in my car when I got it.

It sounds like the toughest part was getting through US customs and getting it through your customs.....surely whatever paperwork was used for that procedure is enough. When I buy a car from the U.S. a copy of the Title (or registration - depending on what that state uses) has to be at the border point at U.S. customs 48-72 hours before the car gets there. This is a US law for cars leaving. What was used there?

Got a paper from Alabama department of revenue that says that cars built pre 74 didn't get titled.
I think that cleared the custom for my car, it's 10 years ago so the rules probably changed over time.

A copy of the registration would make my day for sure. Sadly no paperwork in the glove box.

So you have had the car for 10yrs and now they will not let you register it to get it on the road.   :-\

Maybe you need a good photochop and a printer to "find" the old registration.  :naughty:

If the former owner has a registration with the car,you should have gotten it with the car. However the former owner has to have it signed with his name.
The thing is when you ship the car out of the united states, the shipping company needs the registration from your car to get it out of their customs.
You should get the registration from your car together with the imort papers from your shipper when you pick the car up when it's in your country.
All the paperwork that comes with the car including the registration should get you set to get it lisenced in your country.

At least that's how it is in my country the netherlands.
I've only got a registration from my car, instead of a title, and i have had no problems.

Hope this helps you out.

When I sell a car, the registration remains mine. The license plates which are connected to that registration, are also mine. We do have titles, even for older cars.

In the case of the original poster, they probably do need to use a title service and somehow get a title for that car... They will find a legal way - but it will cost  :Twocents:

It leans to a title service company, my biggest worry is that the car is in Sweden.

mabey someone on here from alabama could get your letter from you along with the vin # and go to the dmv and explain your situation. then they may be able to comunicate with you and get the paperwork you are needing to register your car. they should still have the records on file showing that your car was registered in their state. thats where i would start. beg someone from alabama to be your go between.

what about the title service company? what area are they from. the car had some history and they would have had to search it so they could legaly sell it.or who was it that you purchased it from?

It was bought from a private person, i haven't contacted him yet, seems like i have a phonecall to do, maybe he has some old paper laying around, i doubt it thus ten years have past according to the bill of sale.

you never know, but even if he doesnt have the papers you need, he does know where the car was last titled. if he purchased the car from another state and moved it to alabama without putting it in his name, then selling to you, he will let you know what state to contact. it may work. i would make the call.

Gonna be a long hard road my friend.

A forewarning about these so called "Title companies"
Ok, allow me to tell you what happened to me personally with "Broadway Title", one of those "Tile companies..
I call and get their free packet in the mail. I fill out all nessesary paperwork. I call the local DMV here to make sure that I'm not gonna piss away $175.00 for some "Worthless" paperwork that won't guarantee me a title. For that kinda money, I should get a clean title mailed straight to me. Instead, my local Dmv tells me they've NEVEr heard of such a thing and how would I trnsfer ownership of a car without a tile to begin with to this title comany? I said "Good question"...Now, once I got Broadway Title on the phone, I could see I wasn't getting anywhere with the person I was talking with so I asked to speak to the "Owner/Manager". This is when I was glad I called the local DMV. The guy came on the phone and said: "Hello? May I help you?" [Spoken in a foreign language like broken english with middle eastern accent]. I said "how can I transfer ownership to you guys without a title to begin with?"
Reply: "You sign over ownership in the paperwork and we mail you back the paperwork to present to your DMV Sir".
I replied: "I have talked with my local DMV and they informed me that there's no way I can transfer/sign over ownership without a title and they refuse to issue a title based on this info"...

I sh*t you not, this was the reply I got:
"Sir, have you ever heard of shooting ones self in ones foot?"

Needless to say, I went to the DMV here and applied for a title and got one in less than 1 month and only cost me $50.00.....Do what you will, but you've been warned.

Did you have your car inspected before DMV application, Since my car is here in my garage in Sweden my situation looks kind of dark.
I gladly pay $50 for a title.

I used Broadway Title six years ago on a car I had given to me that had no title.  I sent them the paperwork they requested along with a check.  About three weeks later I got all the paperwork I needed to get a title in my state with absolutely no problems whatsoever.

Did you get your car inspected by a sheriff before you sent in the papers?
