I have a 1971 727 Tranny.........question is what torque converter do they use......a balanced one.......or an unbalanced one?.........Is this true there are these two types?......
How do I tell what I have, by the weights welded to converter or not?.......

I found this one locally and am debating if its correct for my 71

Its  a 3000 stall one........is this to much for a motor in the 450hp range?........I have 355 gears

I am a total novice to the tranny issues

It is not a function of the tranny, its the engine.  If it does not have any weights it is neutral balanced.  What engine is it going behind?

500" NA, Eddy head, pump gas, exhaust manifold with 2 1/2 exhaust with tailpipes
4150 lbs with driver, 3.23 gear, stock converter
11.68 @ 120.2 mph

Its going in A 71 charger with 71 440 steel crankshaft motor......I believe the steel cranks take the Unbalanced converters?

is a 10" 3000 stall a good choice?

Thanks!!

The picture you posted looks like an 11" converter.
The factory big block converter for 71 is a 12" (11 3/4") but the 11" is a better choice for an engine like yours.
If you have a steel crank 440 then it will be internally balanced and a neutral converter is what you will need, providing it is not a 70/71 HP engine, they are external balance steel crank and are identified by weights on the converter and a ex-centric weight on the balancer. This is providing all is original as people may have changed things over the last 40 odd years.
