not sure if this is the correct place so moderators feel free to move it to the correct spot...

this summer my son and i purchased a 73 charger SE from a guy in mississippi, he said he just installed a new gas tank... what he meant to say is he installed a DIFFERENT gas tank! the first time i filled it up, i looked under the car and saw gas leaking out so we hauled azz home and got the oklahoma gas credit card out and siphoned out the gas we just put in.  the rubber donut thingy that the filler neck was in was torn and in really bad shape so i ordered a new donut from megaparts and also replaced the sending unit seal because it looked like it dripped a bit too. the donut went in easy enough but today i went to fill the tank up and its leaking!

what did i do wrong? would it be okay to use some RTV type sealant and go around the donut where the neck is installed? what type of RTV?

or do i need to push the neck in more and then pull it out?

please help!

gas will break down the RTV I use grease to install the filler neck and have never had an issue.

Is the filler tube round in the donut area? Is the tube pitted? Is the donut the right size and seated properly in the tank?

i kinda thought the rtv wouldn't work.....

no leak from the donut to the tank, i could definitely see gas leaking from the neck to seal area. i could wipe it off with a clean rag and gas would seep from the neck... neck seemed round enough but i might be wrong. i difinitely cleaned it up good though before installing it.

i'll pull it tomorrow and have another looky looky....      thanks

Order gaskets from a Dodge dealer! Those Chinese gaskets are not compatible with todays fuel(or any fuel other than water) ::). We learned this the hard way years ago.

Sending unit gasket: 3404451
filler tube seal: 3404182

Wasn't there a warning going around about these a few years ago?
