4 speed question

Im currently building a 69 charger. Its originally an auto and I plan on switching to a 4 speed. I just seen a 4 speed for a 68 b body on craiglist. Im assuming this will work for my car. Any special things I need to check or certain cast numbers. They are asking 400 bucks. Is this a good price or would I be better off waiting and buying a complete conversion kit

Has the tranny been rebuilt? Is it an 18 spline (hemi - heavy duty) unit? $400 seems a bit high for only a 23 spline unit. The '68 built unit will fit just fine in a '69. Do you plan to get the pieces for the 4-speed as you go, or buy a complete kit from an outfit like Brewers? Use the search feature and read up on what it all means. 4-speeds are cool....  :cheers: Oh, and please post a pic of the transmission stamping. :yesnod:

I haven't seen it yet. Its 3 hour drive from me bit im going there this weekend. Im sure its a 23 spline. I've looked at brewers kits. I was just wondering if most people just bought kits if its much cheaper to buy individual pieces

Is it just the 4-speed transmission or does it come with anything else (shifter, shifter handle, bell housing, linkages, etc.)? Unless it's rebuilt $400 sounds kind of high. It *can* be cheaper to buy everything individually but I've found that it's almost a wash if you have to pay someone to rebuild your stuff. It would have been cheaper to buy a rebuilt trans from Brewers that it was for me to have them build my own (partially because I needed extra parts that I didn't know were trashed). If your time has any value then ordering a kit is the way to go. Scrounging up correct parts and paying for shipping (or gas) from 10 different places really adds up.

If you know absolutly nothing about the A833 and the four different bearing collars on the front of them and what to look out for when you open up the side case to see whether the "Dogs" or "Teeth" on the gears have been ground by missing 2nd and 3rd, you would be better off buying a complete kit that has the guesswork out of it...

You will be very frustrated when you find out that that 4-speed grinds in every gear, and pops out of gear, and has some weird, one year only offered bearing retainer on the front that takes a $700.00 bellhousing made out of "Unobtainium"...

ya thats a good point. i dont know a whole lot about transmissions. im a body guy not a mechanic. i would notice any obvious signs but i would most likely miss something small. ill just wait and save up the 5 grand for a complete kit. thanks for the advice everyone
