Sorry, but Edelbrock is too busy to talk to its customers...

Pulling the knocking 318 in favor of a freshly built 340 (stock 71 with a Comp 262XE in it).  I had just put a Weiand Stealth manifold on it with a brandy new Edelbrock Performer 500 cfm.  I went small because I wanted better throttle response and the 318 was stock.  Per the cfm calculator, 500cfm came up when I punched in 340 cubes and a max RPM of 5500, but I thought I'd call Edelbrock tech to ask about it and if I could / should swap the jets to a larger size.  I was figuring that the worse case would be that I would run out of air at high rpm, which I am unlikely to hit often, so since the carb has about 100 miles on it, perhaps I'd give rejetting it a try.

Whenever you call the tech line you get..."Sorry all our representatives are busy...call back later....click" as they literally hang up on you...nice...guess I won't be buying anything from THEM again soon!   :flame:

Any help with the carb issue would be appreciated!   :scratchchin:

Rolling_Thunder

are you having any problems with the carb ?        if it runs fine now just leave it alone...       the proper way of diagnosing it would be with a air/fuel gauge -
1968 Dodge Charger - 6.1L Hemi / 6-speed / 3.55 Sure Grip

2013 Dodge Challenger R/T - 5.7L Hemi / 6-speed / 3.73 Limited Slip

1964 Dodge Polara 500 - 440 / 4-speed / 3.91 Sure Grip

1973 Dodge Challenger Rallye - 340 / A-518 / 3.23 Sure Grip

The carb is fine on the 318...but will it be fine on a hi po 1971 340 with 2.02 valves without a change to the jets or replacement with a bigger carb?

You may actually need smaller jets , the 340 will pull much harder on the carb , Personally the carb is too small I would use a 650 Proform instead , rasing the float level may help a little they are usually low on Eddys

Not deffending Edelbrock, anybody not playing with Chevy's is sucking hind tit with them. However they do have their tuning manual on their website and they have spent time on the phone with me.

Your 500 should run your 340 with minor retuning. Good trottle responce and drivabilaty, however I would think you would be leaving some upper RPM power on the table.

Thanks for the responses.  I am thinking about getting a 650 or 750.  Just disappointing that any vendor supporting the hobby who can't even bother to talk to a customer.

I lost any respect for Eddy a LONG time ago , they mass produce crap , there products are mostly useless
we swapped to Eddy heads on a 440  , we removed ported 452 castings & installed the eddys ported & gained a whopping 2RWHP for $2200 . I have had customers buy their carbs with huge parts of the body casting missing ...sorry no warranty as if it was our fault ! I purchased a set of the 440 Victor heads & it took 40 hours of messing with them to get the engine to turn over , they are designed using an obsolete offset rocker arm & to boot the eddy valley tray designed for the Victors doesn't fit as the bolot holes do not even line up with their own heads !
I try to never buy anything with Eddy on it

I've never had reason to call Edelbrock Tech lately, so I cannot comment on their Customer Service ?
But,
as a professional Engine Builder WITH my own Shop....
I've used literally dozens of sets of the BB Performer RPM Cylinder Heads on everything from 438/440/451/470/ right on up to 499 combos as the "Go To" Budget Head on lower power(500-600hp) builds.

I have found them to be of excellent quality with little issues, and generally very good VALUE and POWER for the Money, especially when Ported and a better seat grind applied.

We Dyno EVERY Engine we build for Horsepower & Torque, to the Customers satisfaction in their presence, as a Company Policy........BEFORE the Engine is accepted.
and IMO,
on any Value for Money, or power potential scale comparison for my Customers, there is simply no comparison between the EDDY, vrs rebuilding/porting the production Factory Iron Heads(non maxi), EDDY wins hands down, even better than the Stealths.

I have also used the Victors more recently, and found them to be a very capable Higher Power Head, more conduscive to larger displacement "Dedicated" Drag Race style efforts, where Fitting, Fabrication, and closer attention to Valvetrain issues and Geometries pretty much "goes with the turf" at that level.
IMO, nothing out of the ordinary, but not really a Head for first timers or a novice DIY guy ?

I would invite anyone here reading this, to also canvass opinions from any Local Performance Engine Builders in their area, for their thoughts ?

Just my 2 cents, no wars wanted....
Only wimps wear Bowties !

I'm not slamming their products...it would just be nice if they would answer the phone, or alternately, at least take emails or at least actively monitor their own forum.  Is that too much to expect?   :shruggy:

I dunno, which is worse...waiting on HOLD for a long time or being told they're swamped and to call later?
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.
