Here is how the reproduction system works. The old trim has a tang, so it is kind of a T shape with a rounded bead on top. The l part of the trim is melted to the vinyl inside a track-like groove. What they want you to do is cut away the old trim leaving the bonded part in the "track". The new part is just the round top bead with 3M trim tape on the back. The idea is that this trim tape is supposed to hold that new strip down.

I had problems with this system. I know others have had great results, but mine, if it was out in the heat for more than 30 minutes that trim started peeling away. I ended up having to epoxy them in place.

The 2nd car I had to do I did something really ghetto, but it works and looks great. I bought some chrome foil. The stuff that is used on models and I applied that on the old strip. I filled the chips with JB Weld and sanded them smooth, I took my time to smoothing it out before applying the foil and it looks better than the reproduction stuff because you are looking at actual chrome metal, not some chrome inside plastic. It will never discolor and if something happens to it where it gets scratched, I can just replace it in about 5 minutes.
