My neighbor from a few houses down, that I don't have much to do with, saw my Charger in my driveway and came over.  He was impressed with the car and said he had a 67 Mustang way back and was a pro at tuning the old motors (ok).  Anyway, my Charger was sitting there running and he asked if he could see the motor, I said fine and popped the hood.  He began examining and I went to the back of the car for a short time until suddenly I heard three full throttle revs with the last one held for a bit.  I ran back to the front and yanked his arm out from under the air cleaner.  After the motor returned to an idle there was a mild squeal that sounded like it was coming from the ps pump, which I assumed was a belt.  Needless to say I sent my neighbor home.

I drove the car for a few miles after that with no noticable loss in power, running good.  I decided to take the belts off briefly to make sure it was in fact the ps pump.  The squeak, which was now intermittent and only at idle and at operating temp, was actually coming from inside the driver side of the motor.  The sound, which is similar to that of a cricket, is most noticable when idling down and it is still there at idle but less and again intermittent.  I took two plugs out of that side (driver) and tested the compression and they were both the same so I ruling out a broken ring (at least until I can test the remainder of them).  What else could this be?  Rod bearing that moved slightly and rubbing?  Oil pump?  With a pc of heater hose I listened around on that side of the motor and the sound seems more noticable on the front side of the motor.

What the hell gets into people?     You may want to inform Mr. Know-It-All he has a repair bill lawsuit coming his way. I was thinking possible bent push rod also.

Thanks for your responses.  I did have all the belts off when I was checking this.  Sounds like a good idea to check the push rods, I'll do that.  I wasn't sure if this would cause the squeak or not but there is some valve train noise on that side (driver).   Interestingly enough, there is no loss of power, and the noise doesn't start until the motor reaches operating temp.
I forgot the mention, this is a 383 4bbl motor.

I had a 273 that had a squeak noise when running also had low oil pressure  It was a spun rod bearing

I forgot to mention that my oil pressure is right up there (55-60 idle 75 driving).  Can a rod bearing move slightly and cause a noise like this?

Although I see it and occasionally do it myself to "Clear out" a vehicle that is loading up, I can't understand why some folks think Revving the sh*t out of engines does them some kind of "Good"?

If they only knew how hard that was on cranks, rods, bearings, pistons, etc. they wouldn't ever do it unless nessesary.
I had a friend who would "Build" engines and fire 'em up, and the FIRST thing he would do is plant his foot on the floor nd take a drink of beer stating proudly, "If it holds up to this, it'll run forever"...

Have you spoken to your neighbor since then?  I would politely inform him that damage was done to the engine and that you will be taking it to a shop for repair.  At that time you kindly tell him that you will get him a detailed and itemized estimate which you will present to him so he can pay you to have the work done.

If he makes a stink it's small claims court time.
