Door handle disassembly for a 72

Can anyone describe how to disassemble the door handle mechanism that is used on 3rd gens?
I want to re-chrome my originals and cannot figure out how to take the springed mechanism off he actual handle....at least without breaking it.

It appears to be some kind of a rivit. Maybe could grind it off and tack a weld on it to reinstall. Tough one! Beware of the aftermarket handles. Price is right but I messed up my paint trying to make it work.

Thanks.  I don't want to go aftermarket becuase of the headaches I have heard.
I will look at the grind/weld option.
