How do I convert to a 1970-and-up electronic voltage regulator?

I've heard that — in addition to having a 1970+ alternator and regulator — I need to splice in a connector to plug into the regulator and also add a wire somewhere. Does anyone know exactly how to do this?

Thanks. I did this today and it works fine; charging at 13.8 volts.

You can change to a dual-field alternator or convert the earlier single-field alternator by replacing one brush assembly.

On the early unit one brush is grounded to the case and the other is isolated from the case, on the later unit both brush assemblies are isolated from the case.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

some alternators ( lates 69 and 70s ) and replacement round back alts have the provision to convert the single prong on dual prong just getting the brush and isolator, but if not, requires some drilling job. Here is:

i brought my 1 wire alternator to a local guy and he made it into a 2 wire. he needed to rumage around his shop for another back half housing from a 2 wire otherwise machining would be needed to the original case back. He charged me $90 the conversion.

i did it because my new harness had 3 leads to the alternator. he was fast to say that it is no better than the 1 wire system. i just didn't want to hack into the new harness. i will be installing an electronic regulator because of the harness also.

you could buy a new alternator (rebuilt) for a little less but everytime i brought him a reman to rebuild i would get a handfull of mismatched parts he took out and would refuse to reuse. although rebuilt the store bought units are full of universal fit parts. also my lights don't dim as much as before the alternator was rebuilt so i know i am getting a better product.

$90 for the conversion? DAMN!!! new reman alts are priced $60!!!!!!! and with MORE OUTPUT if you want
