I took my 1973 Charger out for a summer cruise and while pulling through the gears at high RPM using my ratchet shifter I hit second gear at around 5000RPM and the car started to sputter and stall. Any time i gave it significant throttle it would studder and "Slip?". I limped home and upon testing today it shifts through all gears during low rpms but if you punch it in low gear you hear a horrible grinding, like someone dumped silverware into a trash compactor. Now I know its prolly near grenaded but before I start to tear it apart i was wondering if anyone could diagnose the issue? Sucks too summer is finally here.

UPDATE:

after many hours of research I came upon an post very similar to mine on another muscle car forum. Same situation same noise afterwards it ended up being a non trans related issue. Luckily I will not have to rebuild my Trans...I dont think so anyways. Problem ended up being a bad Drivers side motor mount. I guess it ripped off due to the torque of the engine during my upshift mentioned  above. I tested to see if it was the mount with the hood up after work and Yep the engine raised a good 6 inches while brake torqing in manual low...the loud crunching sound was my Fan shroud being torn apart. I noticed it was cracked but didn't realize it was from my fan blades tearing into it. it also explained why reverse didn't cause the noise because the other mount is fine and held the engine from raising from the other side of the engine bay. so I think my $900 personal DIY trans rebuild just turned into a $50 dollar 2 hour fix? I am hoping though that the whole incident did not cause any residual damage to the rest of the car. I will report back with my status this weekend. Have a great week! and thanks for the help guys.

How is Reverse?

If Reverse works OK and the problem is in all forward gears look for a traumatized rear clutch.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

so what test a reverse burnout and see if I can recreate the sound? I can attempt tomorrow after work but for the most part all the gears engage I mean backing out of the driveway and kinda ideling around the block through the gears seemed fine but putting my foot into it leads to the crunching and grinding. Im also thinking it may be the rear end but my gut says its the tranny just the way the problem started. Regardless if it is a rear clutch gone bad im assuming ill need a complete rebuild? Thanks for the suggestion.

Well I checked just now and yes reverse works flawlessly as I held the brakes and spun the tires without any racket. Did the same in D1 and heard the horrible metal clashing mashing sound. Next weekend im gonna drop the pan...I expect to find a lot of metal bits and what not. So should I expect a total Trans rebuild with all new parts? Or is there a slim chance that It may be a select few bits that need replaced? Regardless I have the money to fix it but I was saving to do the body and suspension work.....ohwell thats what I get for not being a bit carefull with 30+ year old parts.

My philosophy is that removing/reinstalling it is the hard part so, once it's out, don't do less than a complete overhaul.

thanks john I figured that was the answer.

If we all babied are cars, they would be just another form of transport. Craps going to break, now you can rebuild the way you want. But of course you know the old saying, one thing leads to another, or where do you stop. At least your having fun with your car. One day I want to put the 4-speed in my 70, got the motor & Dana in, just have not killed the 727 yet.

well the old girl needs some significant suspension work, need to rebuild the wireing harness again, and lots of body work..this tranny thing really puts a dent in my spending plan/time management process. But I definatly agree about gotta enjoy what you have, while you have it.
