Engine stamping question?

Hi,
If I was looking at a 1968 Charger R/T with a 440 block with a build date of January 5, 1968.
Sould I see the VIN number on the enigine and transmission?
Or, would no VIN number be on the block, but just a dated block of about four months prior (Aug.)?
I have heard that blocks were not stamped until about mid-year? Does anybody know exactly when?
If I dont find numbers matching the VIN on the block, is it a numbers matching car?  How do I know or what else could I check?

My 68 R/T was build in the first week of January 1968 and my block and tranny are stamped with the VIN.
