I have a 71 with about 45,000 miles on it.  I rarely drive the thing but I have read some horror stories about older mopars having electrical issues on or around the firewall.  What should I inspect or clean up there and any other suggestions to prevent fires or shorts?  Thanks, Kim.

I havent owned any 71-s .But the ammeter and its connections .And the bulkhead head at firewall and connections clean and tight .And fusebox terminals clean and tight. And good grounds are a must
A loose or coroded wiring connections .Will cause resistance that will heat up a wire and create a plastic smell.  But a dead short where Pos+ and Neg- come in contact will each other melt wires blow fusible links and cause fires etc The wire that you find with no insulation and dripping plastic. Is what got the hottest and the one to investigate as the cause  Faulty alternators and bad voltage regulators wire damage existing wiring

Clean all of the connections and add a little dielectric grease to them to keep out moisture.  Make sure everything is tight and well grounded.

I have been using DeoxIT to clean the fuse block, contacts and terminals then dielectric grease to seal them, just be careful when using it, I oversprayed onto firewall and now am back to Forest Green in one spot! It also works great for rocker switches if you don't want to disassemble and clean them, spray in and watch the crud flow out, I then use their gold product to semi seal them(really for indoor applications but better than nothing).p.s. don't buy it from Radio Shack, tiny bottle, 14.00 go to caig.com and buy direct, 24.00 for 1200 application spray bottle.

definitelly what stated... mainly ammeter conections, same wires/terminals running through bulkhead AND fuse clamps. Thats the main.

Then ign switch pllug terminals, specially red one, then blue.

Engine bay side, engine harness... Thick black ( alternator ) and blue ( engine source ), forward harness, Thick red and fuselink.

THEN rest of terminals around, but THOSE are the main ones to make a quick mantenience job on the critical areas

There is a thread where talks about how to clean terminals without any kind of extra job around, sinking plugs/terminals in a vinegar and salt solution for some time.
