So I was droping my roller lifters (Comp Cams)in yesterday and on the third set I tried to spin the wheel on the bottom and it was locked up!  :brickwall:

I purchased them thru Muscle Motors, who said no problem send the lifter back.

If I wouldn't of caught that.........

One thing I have learned--check and double check everything!!

Absolutely true without question, doesn't matter who made the parts.  Smokey Yunick would do several mock-ups as engine assembly progressed...I have found this very helpful especially checking machine shop work.

Yeah the rebuilder of my 440 found 1 set of rings 5k undersize compared to the other 7.  Thank god he checks everthing.
This car was sold many years ago to somebody in Wisconsin. I now am retired and living in Florida.

Allways look over new parts....mistakes happen on the assembly line. As the engine assembler it is your responsibility to make sure everything is OK  :yesnod:

What cam did you go with Roger ?

Comp Cam --Hyd Roller  Lift 541/541   Duration 240/248  LSA 112

I remember talking to you about the cam back in March--you suggested  i run 10* more duration --but unfortunately my bottom end was already together. :brickwall:

No worries Roger ; it'll run just fine.  :yesnod: The 112* LSA will spread the power out and make it mild mannered.  :2thumbs:

Should be a breeze to tune  :icon_smile_big:

I recommended something similar for Brian's (1HotDaytona) old 493 but his was a hyd flat tappet and it was a beast.  :icon_smile_cool:

I ordered some NGK plugs from Hughes and they asked what compression I will be running (which will be 10.9) and they sent me R5671A-8----Not to cold are they?

Yep, too cold... inmo.  :yesnod:

My 572 uses a 6-series NGK @ 10.7:1 and used the same heat range in my old 446 that had 10.5:1  ;)

Nope....pure 94 UL pump gas.  :icon_smile_big:

Both were dynoed with wintergrade 93 pump swill and not a hint of detonation  :2thumbs:

Tight quench/aluminum heads and good cam selection is key  :yesnod:

Double trouble!

I started checking all my spark plugs for continuity after missing a race when one cylinder wouldn't fire...didn't have time to track down the faulty brand new spark plug before the start.

Finally received my replacement lifter from Comp Cams---It has the same part# but the lifter looks different---Also I measured the lifters and the old ones

are .705 and the new one is .475 (long)--I guess I can make up the difference with the adjusters on the rockers. what does everyone think?

Is the pushrod cup (in the lifter body) in the same location ?  :scratchchin:

If not, you will need to use a different length pushrod. Ideally you want 1-2 threads (adjuster) showing under the rocker body to allow for proper lubrication. If the pushrod cup is too low the oil squirting from the rocker body will miss the cup and you'll start burning pushrods & adjusters  :yesnod:

when I measured the lifters that was from the cup to the roller--so I would have to say the cup in the new roller is .230 shorter--that shouldn't make that much of a difference should it?---Why would they send me a replacement lifter that is different?  I sent them the old one that was bad.

Roger, maybe there was a design change and that accounts for the different pushrod plunger seat height ?  :shruggy:

I would call them and ask and explain the situation.  Maybe they can warrenty the rest of the set so that way all your pushrods end up being the same length.  :yesnod:

The .230 difference is significant. You must have the pushrod cup in the correct location or the oil squirting from the rockers will miss the cup and you'll start to eat pushrods/adjusters.  :P

Thanks Ron
I called Comp Cams yesterday and explained to them that they sent me a differant lifter---He said it should be the same they only have one roller lifter for this motor---I told him I measured it and it is shorter and I have photos that I can send him, then he said I need to call back Mon. and talk to one of their tecs.

Just seems like its one step forward and two back  :brickwall:
